LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. - Tara O'Brien (Twickenham London, UK/St. Mark's Catholic School) scored the 4th and final goal as the Lady Lions tamed the Shock of Washington Adventist University in a home contest.
O'Brien's assist that led to Alanna Van Ness (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway HS) goal in the 67th minute made her the All-Time school leader in assists. Ironically, this accolade was held by Shaynita Blanchard who was the assistant coach of the Washington Adventist team that played Lincoln today. "It is unbelievable feeling to reach this milestone" O'Brien said of her All-Time school leader in assists with 9. "But the most important thing is what the team achieves. I am not preoccupied with individual accolades. Our team has gotten stronger and we can only get better." she continued.
Lincoln started to pile the pressure on the Shock right from the referee's whistle and earned a deserving penalty kick in the 12th minute. Tormentor-in-chief Christian Harris (Rochester, NY/The Aquinas Institute) ripped the defense of Washington Adventist apart before she was brought down in the 18-yard box. The resultant kick which was poorly taken by Harris which was saved by Tasheika Russell who was the goal tender for the Shock. "The team has a designated player who takes penalty kicks and free kicks so of course I was furious even if the kick had gone in" 4th year head coach Boateng admitted. "But Christian (Harris) responded well to the set back a minute later when she rounded Russell before putting the ball in an empty net. "When you score a minute after missing penalty kick, that is good relief. It actually did a lot of good to my confidence" Harris explained. Lincoln went into the break with a lone goal lead with 14-1 shots advantage.
The second half was not much different from the first with Lincoln still in the driving seat dictating the pace of the game. Harris scored the second goal of the game which increased her tally to three for the season on the 48th minute. If any thought of goal fest was on the pipeline then you will have to revise your notes. The Shock hit back almost instantly after Lincoln's second goal. Asya Thomas caught Chloe Grice (Lancashire, UK/Runshaw HS) off her line and unleashed a volley that hit the roof of the net. The goal boosted the confidence of the Washington Adventist players as they poured forward in search of the second goal. But the re-arranged defensive setup of Courtney Moss (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy), Emily Woodruff (San Diego, CA/Madison HS) and Cierra Bean (Penacook, N.H./New Hampton HS) kept it tidy at the back.
Lincoln began to be patient with their build up with some delightful short passes. A build up from the Lincoln defensive area saw a ball played to O'Brien's feet. O'Brien played a one-two with Tamara Green. O'Brien laid a delicate pass to Alanna Van Ness (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway HS) whose shot at goal beat Russell. This was Van Ness' first collegiate goal. "I had 4 or 5 shots so it was frustrating I wasn't hitting the target. When this one went in, I was like I finally made it. Tara's pass was too good to miss. I am excited I didn't disappoint" said Van Ness. If there was any hopes of Washington Adventist coming back into the game then that hope was dashed in the 84th minute when O'Brien slot home a pass from Dena Ingraham (Nassau, Bahamas/Kingsway Academy).
The Lady Lions outshot Washington Adventist 26-2. Tashieka Russell had 10 saves to her credit while Chloe Grice (Lancashire, UK/Runshaw HS) was not bothered throughout the game.
Coach Boateng and The Lady Lions will be on the road for a 3.30pm game time with Chowan University on Saturday and a 1pm kickoff with Mount Olive College on Sunday.
