Second Half Dominance Not Enough as Lions Fall in Season Opener

Box Score

WATERBURY, CT. - In a game of two halves, The Lincoln University soccer team could not turn second half dominance (9-4 shots advantage) over Post University into goals as the Lady Lions fell 0-2 (0-1-0) on the road.

The Eagles pressurized the Lady Lions in the early exchanges of the game but a compact defensive network of Jada Benn (Abingdon, MD/Harford Technical HS), Cierra Bean (Penacook, N.H./New Hampton HS), Courtney Moss (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) and Emily Woodruff (San Diego, CA/Madison HS) came up tops in all those forays by Post. "The work we have been doing with our defensive shape paid off" Said Coach Boateng. "Cierra Bean (Penacook, N.H./New Hampton HS) played a game of her life having the strong and dangerous Tessa Dunster in her pocket the entire game." Boateng continued. "We will take the positives out of this game and get ready for the home opener."

Post's first goal was recorded in the 32nd minute by Lexxi Carroll on a ball over the top of the defense which beat the offside trap. This left Carroll one on one with the goalkeeper who she beat to score the goal. The second goal scored in the 48th minute was started by Carroll with a long ball from midfield to an unmarked Valerie Moore in a wide open area whose timely cross to the top of the box was connected by Renel Dennis and put in the back of the net.

If Lincoln needed a wakeup call the second goal was it. Lincoln took full control of the game from this point in an effort to reduce the deficit and force a win. A long searching ball from Alanna Van Ness (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway HS) to Christian Harris (Rochester, NY/The Aquinas Institute) earned Lincoln a corner kick. Haley Hendricks (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) sent in a perfect kick that found the head of Tara O'Brien (Twickenham London, UK/St. Mark's Catholic School) but Post's Grace McConnell saved the header to the relief of the home fans. The hard working Tamara Greene (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway HS) who was a constant threat both on the left and right flanks sent in some dangerous crosses that resulted in nervy moments for the Post players. A combination play involving Tamara, Haley and Dena Ingraham (Nassau, Bahamas/Kingsway Academy) freed Christian Harris (Rochester, NY/The Aquinas Institute) on the right. After Christian dribbled speedily past two defenders, her shot missed the goal narrowly.

Chloe Grice (Lancashire, UK/Runshaw HS) recorded 3 saves in the game. "Chloe breeds confidence in the team. She was excellent in goal today and cannot be faulted for the goals. Her positioning made it difficult for Post to play balls over the top as she cleaned all those balls"

Lincoln returns to the field on September 13 for the home opener as the Lady Lions welcome Alderson-Broaddus College.
