Box Score 2 PETERSBURG, Va. – The Lincoln University softball team played in its first-ever CIAA Championships on Thursday afternoon as the Lady Lions dropped a 9-1 decision to Winston-Salem State in the opener and fell, 9-3 in an elimination game against Fayetteville State at the Petersburg Sports Complex.
In the opener against Winston-Salem State, the Lady Lions had three hits (
Danielle Owes (Edgewater Park, N.J./Burlington County Institute of Technology),
Emily Woodruff (San Diego, CA/Madison HS) and
Erin Rucker (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights HS)) and trailed 3-0 after three innings. Winston-Salem State exploded for six runs on four hits in the fourth to put the game out of reach at 9-0.
Lincoln tried to rally in the fifth as Owes reached on a two-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Woodruff legged out an infield hit as Owes scored from second. However,
Avree Morton (Uniondale, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS) grounded out to the third baseman to end the game.
Rucker (7-15) took the loss in four innings of action. She surrendered nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits.
Yamin Lee picked up the win in five innings with three strikeouts.
In the elimination contest against Fayetteville State, Lincoln raced out to a 3-0 lead with a three-run third.
Jasmine Dabney (Baltimore, Md./New Town HS) led off the frame with a single to left and advanced to second when
Mariah Coates (Reading, Pa./Reading HS) drew a base on balls. Dabney scored when Owes singled up the middle with one down. Woodruff singled to left to load the bases. Morton followed with a single through the left side to plate Coates and Owes.
The Lady Broncos (13-29) rallied with a four-run fifth to grab a 4-3 advantage and exploded with five runs in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead.
Rucker (7-16) took the loss in six innings as she surrendered nine runs (six earned) on 14 hits.
Kristen Bell (7-14) earned the win as she gave up three runs on six hits and fanned 10 in seven innings.
Lincoln concludes the season with an 8-19 overall record.
