Lady Lions drop CIAA doubleheader to Lady Panthers

Lincoln dropped a doubleheader on Saturday to Virginia Union
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RICHMOND, Va. – The Lincoln University softball team continued its brutal road trip on Saturday as the Lady Lions dropped a doubleheader at Virginia Union, 12-4, and 6-4, at the Virginia Union University Softball Field.
 
In the opener, Lincoln (3-10 overall, 1-8 CIAA) began the scoring with a pair of runs.
 
Emily Woodruff (San Diego, CA/Madison HS) walked with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Avree Morton (Uniondale, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS) was hit by a pitch. Both runners scored when Erin Rucker (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights HS) doubled to left.
 
The Lady Lions added to the lead with a run in the second, but the Lady Panthers (5-4, 5-4) used a five-run second to grab a 5-3 advantage.
 
Virginia Union plated a run in the third, a run in the fourth and exploded for five in the fifth for the 12-4 victory.
 
Rucker surrendered 12 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits with a pair of strikeouts and three walks in 4.2 innings to take the loss.
 
Quincy Lewis had eight strikeouts in five innings and gave up four runs on six hits to get the win.
 
In the second game, Lincoln broke the 0-0 tie in the second inning with four runs to take a 4-0 lead.
 
Rucker led off the frame with a base hit to center and moved to second when Mariah Liberty (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union HS) drew a walk. Jasmine Dabney (Baltimore, Md./New Town HS) reached on an error and advanced to second as Rucker scored. With two down, Danielle Owes (Edgewater Park, N.J./Burlington County Institute of Technology) reached on an error, which allowed Liberty and Dabney to score. Owes came in when Woodruff doubled to left.
 
Virginia Union cut the margin to 4-3 with three runs in the fifth and took a 6-3 advantage with three runs in the sixth for the win.
 
Rucker took the loss in six innings of work. She gave up six runs (five earned) on 11 hits with a pair of strikeouts.
 
Lewis earned the complete-game win by surrendering four runs (all unearned) on four hits with a pair of strikeouts and two walks.
 
Lincoln concludes its four-day round trip with a CIAA Northern Division doubleheader in Petersburg, Va., against Virginia State on Sunday, March 24. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
