Lady Lions tripped up in doubleheader sweep at Goldey-Beacom

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WILMINGTON, Del. – The Lincoln University softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Goldey-Beacom College, 14-1 in five innings and 9-1 in six innings on Wednesday afternoon at the Jackson Athletic Complex.
 
In the first game, Lincoln (3-4) fell behind, 6-1, after the first inning, but tried to rally in the second as the Lady Lions picked up a run.
 
Smith began the frame with a double to left center and advance to third on a base hit to left by Mariah Liberty (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union HS). Smith scored when Liberty stole second to cut the deficit to 6-1.
 
However, the Lightning closed out the game with two runs in the second and six in the third.
 
Offensively, Lincoln had two hits – Smith and Avree Morton (Uniondale, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS).
 
Danielle Owes (Edgewater Park, N.J./Burlington County Institute of Technology) (1-1) took the loss as she pitched four innings
 
Courtney Dolson (1-3) picked up the win in five innings.
 
In the second game, the Lady Lions pounded out four hits, including two by Erin Rucker (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights HS) in the loss. Smith and Mariah Coates (Reading, Pa./Reading HS) each recorded one.
 
After two scoreless innings, Goldey-Beacom (3-7) broke the tie with four runs in the third, but Lincoln rallied with one in the top half of the fourth.
 
Smith opened the inning with a triple down the right-field line and came in to score when Liberty was out at first on a bunt.
 
The Lightning answered with a run in the bottom of the frame and added another run in the fifth, before exploding for three in the sixth for the win.
 
Rucker (2-3) took the loss in 5.2 innings. She gave up nine runs (seven earned) on 12 hits with a walk and a strikeout.
 
Ashley Antosh (2-3) earned the win in six innings. She scattered four hits and fanned six.
 
The Lady Lions continue non-conference action as Lincoln travels 3 p.m., Thursday, March 21 to Rutherford, N.J., to face Felician College in a doubleheader.
