Win streak moves to four as Lions hold off Hawks

Box Score LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Three players reached double figures in scoring as the Lincoln University men's basketball team held off a late charge by Chowan in winning its fourth straight game as the Lions roared to a 61-53 victory on Wednesday night in a CIAA Northern Division contest at Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.
 
“We're playing our best basketball here at the end of the season,” Lincoln head coach John Hill said. “I'm just excited about having an opportunity to win the division.”
 
With one game remaining in the regular season, Lincoln and Elizabeth City State remain tied for the top spot in the CIAA Northern Division as Elizabeth City State defeated Virginia Union on a buzzer beater, 62-61 on Wednesday night.
 
George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) was nearly perfect from the floor as he went 5-for-6 shooting to finish with a team-high 17 points. He also grabbed four rebounds and dished out a pair of assists. Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) came off the bench to pour in 12 points and haul in five rebounds and Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) added 10 points as Lincoln shot 51 percent (22-of-43).
 
“Our main goal was to get the ball inside,” George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) said. “We're just going to play our hearts out in our next game coming up on Saturday against Virginia State.”
 
The Lions (16-9 overall, 9-6 CIAA, 7-2 CIAA North) raced out to a 12-6 advantage after a 3-pointer by Beloved Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Princeton Day Academy) with 13:54 remaining in the opening half. However, Chowan answered and used a 14-4 run, capped by a pair of Kyree Bethel free throws to grab a 20-16 advantage.
 
Lincoln closed out the first half strong by out-scoring the Hawks during the final six minutes, 12-4, to take a 28-24 advantage into the half.
 
The Lions opened up a 40-31 lead after a Washington layup with 13:21 remaining, but the Hawks refused to go quietly and cut the deficit to 40-38 after a Chris Williams dunk with 11:13 left.
 
Chowan couldn't get any closer as Lincoln used a 16-7 run during the next 10 minutes to put the game out of reach at 56-45.
 
Kyree Bethel led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Quinton McDuffie and Williams each had eight points as Chowan was 21-of-46 from the floor for 46 percent.

Kennedy HS), Quinton Hector (Schertz, Texas/Samuel Clemens HS), Beloved Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Princeton Day Academy) and Kenny Sharpe (Chester, Pa./Elite Academy))… The Lions pushed their home record to 6-4…Lincoln held the edge in points off turnovers, 19-10, and bench points, 33-9…The Lions were 5-for-14 from behind the 3-point line (George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) (2), Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) (2), Beloved Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Princeton Day Academy) (1))…Lincoln finished with 29 rebounds, seven steals and six assists…There was one tie and four lead changes.
