Lions Basketball Rally To Defeat West Chester, 69-60

George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) led the Lions with 24 points and four assists in a 69-60 victory over West Chester University on Saturday, November 9th. The Lincoln University outscored their opponent 46-35 in the second half, picking up the win in their season opener.

The Lions fell into an early hole as they began the game trailing 0-8 within the first three minutes. Lincoln responded with an 11-2 run capped off by a layup by George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) to take an 11-10 lead at the 13:05 mark in the first half.

Both teams went on to trade baskets for the rest of the period, with the score being 25-23 at halftime in West Chester's favor.There were six lead changes in the half.

West Chester stormed out of the gate of the second half with a 16-9 run concluded by a pair of free-throws by Cory Blake to take a 41-32 advantage with 12:47 left to play.

Lincoln immediately replied by scoring 20 of the game's next 30 points, and took a 52-51 lead. Jackson and Washington combined for 17 of those 20 points in that seven minute stretch.

Over the next three minutes, no team jumped out to a lead bigger than two points until Washington nailed a jumper to make the score a 59-55, Lions advantage with 2:43 left.

Lincoln went on to sink six of eight free-throws to close the game and seal the win 69-60.

"Once we figured out what (West Chester was doing on defense), we just adjusted to it," said George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) referring to Lincoln's second half point-explosion.

"(Coach John Hill and the rest of the team) kept telling me to play my game," said Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) as he reflected on his slow start in early in the contest. "I was a little out of my game in the first half so I tried to do what I could to help us win."

After a slow start in the first half, the Lions regrouped and shot 54% from the field to defeat the visiting Golden Rams of West Chester University. Lincoln's George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) was perfect from the free-throw line on five attempts and also from long range nailing all three shots in the second half. Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) was 5-7 from the field and 4-7 from the free-throw line in the second half for 14 points. Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) had 10 points in the second half and nailed crucial free-throws down the stretch for the Lions.

Defensively, the Lions held the Golden Rams to 38% shooting from the field and forced nine turnovers in the second half. West Chester went 0-5 on three-point attempts while the Lions nailed four.

Four Lions reached double figure scoring led by George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS)'s 24 points. Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) and Kyle Aiken (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) led the Lions bench with 16 and 11 points respectively, and Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) added 13 points. Chris Kinney (Washington, DC/Theodore Roosevelt SHS) controlled the interior with a game-high ten rebounds and George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) paced the Lions with four assists.

The Lions have a 1-0 overall record and will travel to Bloomsburg, PA on November 16th at 3 p.m. for their second game of the season against Bloomsburg University.
