Lions Football Rushes For Season-Best Against Chowan

Box Score Lincoln University, PA – The Lions collected a season-high 136 rushing yards leading to 430 yards of total offense, but turnovers led to a 77-14 loss to Chowan University on Saturday, November 10 in The Lincoln University Lions Football Stadium. The Lincoln University honored eleven football seniors in their final home game as a Lion.

The Lincoln University averaged 4.2 yards per carry against the Hawks from Chowan University for a season-high 136 rushing yards with a touchdown. The offense tied a season-best of 294 passing yards, but nine costly turnovers and eleven Chowan touchdowns steered the Lions into defeat in their final game of the 2013 season.

Quarterback Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) carried the Lions offense 76-yards in four plays and an early 7-0 lead over the Hawks on Senior Day. He completed his first pass attempt for five yards then broke out for a huge 39-yard rush into Hawks territory for a first down. Cook then completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to tight-end Kenny Faulcon (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen HS) just over a minute into the ball game. Kicker/Punter Kyle Jaski (Escondido, Calif./Kenwood HS) nailed the point after and the Lions led 7-0.

Chowan's offense hit the field for their first possession of the game, but Lincoln's defensive back Dezman Ellis (Bowie, MD/DeMatha Catholic HS) forced a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Gavin Lampkin (Baltimore, Md./W.E.B. Dubois HS) at the Hawks 48 yard line.

Lincoln went on to throw three consecutive interceptions to the Chowan defense. The Hawks responded with four consecutive touchdowns in nine minutes for a 35-7 advantage late in the second quarter.  Lincoln's offense booted four straight punts and ended the first half with their fourth interception.

Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) threw a 63-yard strike to Anthony Green (Chester, PA/Upper Darby HS) in the third quarter that led to the Lions final touchdown. Running back Steve Gilliam broke through the Hawks defense for a 22-yard rush on the following play to the Hawks two yard line. Lincoln finally found the end zone as quarterback Khari Nguzi rushed for a two yard touchdown at the 9:33 mark in the third quarter. Kyle Jaski (Escondido, Calif./Kenwood HS) kicked the extra-point and the Lions trailed 42-14.

Chowan continued their rout of the Lincoln defense adding five more touchdowns for a 77-14 victory.

Quarterback Khari Nguzi led the rushing attack with seven carries for 50 yards and a touchdown. Steve Gilliam also had seven rushes for 40 yards, while John Taggart (Philadelphia, PA/Wilmington Friends School) had four rushes for 26 yards and Mark Newlin (Trenton, NJ/Nottingham HS) had two rushes for 16 yards.

Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) completed 14-of-34 pass attempts for 294 total yards with one touchdown. Wide receiver Akeem Jordan (Washington, DC/Carroll HS) led the offense with five catches for 112 yards. Larquise Hobbs (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton HS) had three catches for 31 yards and Anthony Green (Chester, PA/Upper Darby HS) added two catches for 80 yards.

Defensive back Brion Robinson (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook HS) recorded a game-high 11 total tackles against Chowan. Defensive lineman Dawan Marzett (Los Angeles, CA/Westchester HS) and defensive back Lorenzo Adams (Philadelphia, PA/George Washington HS) each had six tackles, while linebacker Travis Simmons (Atlanta, GA/Maynard Jackson HS) added five tackles. Gavin Lampkin (Baltimore, Md./W.E.B. Dubois HS) and defensive lineman Randy McCrae both had sacks against the Chowan offense and linebacker Jeffery Byard and Lampkin each recovered a fumble.

The Lions close out their 2013 season with an overall record of 1-9.
