Football Stumbles on the Road to Johnson C. Smith

Box Score Charlotte, NC – Lincoln threw for a season-high 294 yards, averaging 6.4 yards per play in a tough 49-10 loss to Johnson C. Smith on Saturday, October 5th. Wide receiver Akeem Jordan (Washington, DC/Carroll HS) hauled in a career-long 65-yard touchdown pass and finished with 146 yards receiving.

Quarterback Khari Nguzi took his first ever collegiate start against the Golden Bulls. On the game's opening drive, Nguzi hooked up with Latevin Walker (Daytona Beach, FL/Atlantic HS) for 48 yards moving the Lions into Golden Bulls territory. Lincoln's opening drive was put to an end by an interception thrown in the Lion's red zone resulting in a missed opportunity.

Two drives later, Johnson C. Smith scored the game's first points on a 49-yard rush by DeAndre Jones for a 7-0 lead with 7:22 remaining in the first quarter.

The Lions then went 94-yards in 12 plays for their first points in the second quarter. Deep in Lions territory, Akeem Jordan (Washington, DC/Carroll HS) caught a 41-yard pass from Khari Nguzi on the drive's first play. Nguzi later hooked up with Latevin Walker (Daytona Beach, FL/Atlantic HS) for 34-yards and a key first down setting up first and goal on the Golden Bulls two yard line. After two failed rushes and an incomplete pass, the Lions faced fourth and goal from their five yard line. Kicker Kyle Jaski (Escondido, Calif./Kenwood HS) nailed a 23-yard field goal attempt cutting into the Johnson C. Smith lead, 7-3. On the ensuing possession, Johnson C. Smith responded with a 70-yard scoring drive to extend their lead 14-3 with 5:03 left in the half.

Quarterback Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) was inserted into the lineup as the Lions trailed 14-3 and threw a 65-yard touchdown strike to Akeem Jordan (Washington, DC/Carroll HS). Cook took four plays and just over a minute to rally his team back with a big play through the air. Lincoln faced a 14-10 deficit with three minutes left in the half. The Golden Bulls forced the Lions offense into throwing another interception with a minute to go and went on to score two touchdowns before the end of the quarter for a 28-10 lead.

Lincoln's offense was unable to produce any touchdowns in the second half. Johnson C. Smith controlled the clock with a balanced attack and scored three more touchdowns to defeat the Lions, 49-10.

Lincoln's Akeem Jordan (Washington, DC/Carroll HS) and Latevin Walker (Daytona Beach, FL/Atlantic HS) combined for 259 receiving yards. Jordan finished with six receptions for 146 yards with a touchdown, while Walker caught five passes for 113 yards. Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) completed 8 of 17 pass attempts for 164 yards to lead the Lions. Khari Nguzi finished with 130 yards on 6 of 13 attempts. On the ground, Jonathan Taggart and Asher Watlington (Amityville, NY/Amityville HS) both finished with 18 yards rushing each. Steve Gilliam added 12 rushing yards and Nguzi pitched in with nine yards.

On special teams, kicker/punter Kyle Jaski (Escondido, Calif./Kenwood HS) averaged 49.5 yards per punt and put two kicks inside the Golden Bulls 20-yard line, both were season-best for the Lions.

Defensively, Brion Robinson (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook HS) had 17 total tackles for the Lions. Robinson made 11 solo tackles and assisted on six others while breaking up two passes. Gavin Lampkin (Baltimore, Md./W.E.B. Dubois HS) followed with 13 tackles and Lorenzo Adams (Philadelphia, PA/George Washington HS) and Dawan Marzett (Los Angeles, CA/Westchester HS) both had nine tackles.

The Lions drop to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Lincoln will host Virginia Union in their next game on Saturday, October 12th at 2 p.m. on Health & Wellness Day in Lincoln University, PA.
