Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – Three players scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as the Lincoln University men's basketball team fell, 60-57, against Virginia Union in a CIAA Northern Division contest on Saturday night at Barco-Stevens Hall.
George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) was 6-of-13 from the floor to finish with 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead Lincoln (10-8 overall, 3-6 CIAA, 1-2 CIAA North).
Kenny Sharpe (Chester, Pa./Elite Academy) registered 12 points, three assists and a pair of steals, while
Richard Glover (Baltimore, Md./Havre De Grace HS) had a season-high 11 points and eight boards as the Lions were 22-of-64 shooting for 34 percent.
Lincoln raced out to a 7-2 advantage after a
George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) 3-pointer with 17:43 remaining in the opening half, but Virginia Union answered with a 17-5 run, capped by a pair of free throws by Omar Briggs with 8:54 left to give the Panthers a 17-12 lead.
A
Kenny Sharpe (Chester, Pa./Elite Academy) 3-pointer cut the deficit to 22-19 with 4:46 left, but the Panthers quickly responded with a 6-0 run to give Virginia Union a 28-19 advantage with 3:49 remaining.
The Lions cut the margin to 31-25 at the half and 33-31 with 16:21 left after a Sharpe 3-pointer, but again the Panthers answered and took a 37-31 lead with 15:03 remaining after a Wesley Simmons layup.
Lincoln tied the game at 39 after a 3-pointer by
Beloved Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Princeton Day Academy) with 12:53 remaining, but the Panthers used a 14-4 during the next six minutes to take a 53-43 advantage.
The Lions rallied down the stretch and cut the deficit to 56-54 after a
George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) 3-pointer with 1:41 left, and the margin was trimmed to 58-57 after a pair of free throws by Glover with 26 seconds remaining.
However, free throws by Ken Pankey and Simmons in the last 25 seconds helped lift Virginia Union to the win.
Juan Wilson paced the Panthers with a double-double, 16 points and 10 rebounds. Marcel Crump added 12 points as Virginia Union shot 33 percent (16-of-48).
