Kenny Sharpe (Chester, Pa./Elite Academy)'s 3-pointer at the buzzer lifted the Lincoln University men's basketball team to a stunning 59-58 victory over Saint Augustine's on Saturday night in a CIAA contest at Emery Gymnasium.
Sharpe's buzzer beater capped a frantic final 16 seconds and helped Lincoln snap a three-game losing streak.
With the score tied at 56, Percy Woods scored on a layup to give the Falcons a 58-56 advantage with five seconds left. After a timeout by Lincoln with two seconds, Sharpe got the ball and launched the 3-pointer to give the Lions the thrilling victory.
Sharpe paced Lincoln in 25 minutes of action with 22 points on 3-of-13 shooting and 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point line.
Beloved Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Princeton Day Academy) finished with 13 points, while
Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) added 10 points as the Lions were 21-of-55 from the floor for 38 percent.
Lincoln (9-5 overall, 2-3 CIAA) raced to an 8-4 advantage after a Rogers jumper with 14:52 remaining in the opening half, but Saint Augustine's quickly answered with a 10-1 run to grab a 14-9 lead after a Tyquan Stroman 3-pointer with 10:52 left.
The Lions responded with a 12-2 run during the next three minutes to take a 21-16 lead after a Rogers free throw with 7:47 remaining. The Falcons (9-6, 2-3) again answered and used a 14-9 run during the final seven minutes to take a 31-30 advantage into the break.
A Stroman 3-pointer gave Saint Augustine's a 38-34 lead with 16:36 left, but Lincoln answered with a 14-6 run to grab a 48-44 lead after a
Stefan Whittingham (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Fort Lauderdale HS) layup with 10:28 remaining.
Neither team had a lead larger than three points during the final 10 minutes, which set up the dramatic game-winning shot by Sharpe.
Woods and Stroman each finished with 12 points as the Falcons shot 44 percent (22-of-50).
