LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — Seven different players found the back of the net on Thursday evening as the Lincoln University women's soccer team exploded for nine goals in a 9-1 rout of Valley Forge Christian College in the home opener at Lincoln University Stadium.
Playing in front of its home crowd for the first time in a year, Lincoln didn't waste any time breaking the scoreless tie.
In just the second minute,
Tara O'Brien (Twickenham London, UK/St. Mark's Catholic School) assisted on a
Courtney Moss (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) goal to give the Lady Lions (2-1) a 1-0 lead. O'Brien, who leads the team in goals with eight, gave Lincoln a 2-0 advantage in the 7
th minute on an unassisted goal. O'Brien found the back of the net seven minutes later with her second goal on a shot from just outside the penalty area as Lincoln extended the lead to 3-0.
Emily Woodruff (San Diego, CA/Madison HS), who picked up her first two collegiate goals in the win, scored in the 31
st minute off an assist by Moss as the Lady Lions took a 4-0 advantage into the break.
Woodruff opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the second half off an assist from O'Brien, and
Isabella Harris (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS), playing in her first collegiate game, scored an unassisted goal from about 35 yards out in the 57
th minute.
Haley Hendricks (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) also picked up first career collegiate goal in the 63
rd minute off an assist from O'Brien to extend the Lady Lions margin to 7-0.
A
Mariah Coates (Reading, Pa./Reading Senior HS) goal, assisted by Woodruff, gave Lincoln a comfortable 8-0 lead. However, the shutout ended in the 84
th minute when Morgan Godwin scored on an unassisted goal to chip away at the deficit, 8-1.
Urszula Koczkodaj (Szczecin, Poland/) added the final Lincoln goal in the 89
th minute as the Lady Lions celebrated their first home-opening win in more than five seasons.
Sima Sinforosa had one save for Lincoln, while Amanda McGinness finsihed with 14 saves for the Lady Patriots (0-2).
Lincoln out-shot Valley Forge, 33-3, and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Lady Lions return to action 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Lincoln University Stadium against New York Institute of Technology.
