LU softball takes hard-fought doubleheader defeats

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BOWIE, Md. – The Lincoln University softball team tried to rally in the first game of a doubleheader against Bowie State, but fell just short in losing, 4-2 and dropped the second game, 15-0, on Saturday in a CIAA Northern Division twinbill at Lady Bulldog Field.
 
In the opener, Lincoln (0-16 overall, 0-12 CIAA, 0-6 CIAA Northern) fell behind 3-0, but cut the deficit to 3-1 with a run in the top of the fifth inning.
 
Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) led off the frame with an infield hit and advanced to second when Jasmine Dabney (Baltimore, Md./New Town HS), who went 1-for-3, reached on an infield hit. After a pitching change, Danielle Owes (Edgewater Park, N.J./Burlington County Institute of Technology), who went 2-for-3, singled through the right side and advanced to second on the play as DuBose scored and Dabney took third. Mariah Liberty (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union HS) reached on a fielder's choice as Dabney was out at home. Erin Rucker (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights HS) struck out and Owes tried to score on a passed ball to end the threat.
 
Despite the Lady Bulldogs scoring a run in the bottom of the inning, Lincoln continued to put pressure on the Bowie State defense and plated a run in the top half of the sixth.
 
Avree Morton (Uniondale, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS), who went 1-for-3, led off the inning with a double to left center and moved to third when Sarah Danaher (Waitsfield, Vt./Harwood Union HS) grounded out to the second baseman. With two down, DuBose, who went 1-for-2, walked and stole second. Morton scored on the play to cut the deficit to 4-2.
 
Rucker (0-15) took the loss in working six innings. She gave up four runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
 
Hayley Flint (3-2) took the win in pitching four innings. She gave up a run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
 
In the second game, the Lady Lions' bats went cold in a 15-0 loss to the Lady Bulldogs (11-7, 9-1, 4-0).
 
Rucker took the loss in pitching four innings. She gave up 15 runs (nine earned) on 14 hits with a pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts.
 
Shelby Snyder (3-2) earned the win with seven strikeouts in five innings.
 
Morton and Owes collected hits for Lincoln.
 
The Lady Lions step out of CIAA Northern Division action, but will face a familiar conference foe as Lincoln welcomes Shaw University 1 p.m., Sunday, April 1 at Old Gold Field at the Oxford Athletic Association Sports Complex.
