Box Score LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. –
Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology) drained a key 3-pointer and
Kenny Sharpe (Chester, Pa./Elite Academy) finished four assists shy of a triple double as the Lincoln University men's basketball team edged Chowan, 64-63, on Thursday night in a CIAA Northern Division showdown at Manuel Rivero Hall.
“This was a huge win because it gave us a chance to sweep a divisional opponent,” Lincoln head coach
John Hill said. “We're fighting with Elizabeth City State for third and if it comes to head-to-head, of course we will be fourth. We are showing progress and that is what I always tell the guys. Kenny had a phenomenal night. He made a big 3-pointer when the score was tied. He was all over the floor tonight, playing with a lot of heart and soul and toughness.”
Sharpe finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists – all career highs.
George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) added 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
Jai Kellman (Brooklyn, N.Y./George Westinghouse HS) and Mooney scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, as the Lions, who swept the season series over Chowan, were 24-of-52 from the floor for 46 percent.
“We played hard for Denzel the whole night because it is what we feel like we must do,” Sharpe said. “He came through for us in the end because that's what he does.”
The Lions (11-13 overall, 6-7 CIAA, 4-3 CIAA Northern), winners of three of their last four games, trailed 21-14 with 6:54 remaining in the opening half after a jumper by Mark McGlone. However, Lincoln rallied and used a 15-4 run to close out the first half to take a 29-25 advantage into the break.
Chowan took a 35-31 lead after a Kyree Bethel 3-pointer with 16:08 remaining, but Lincoln answered and used a 10-0 run, capped by a Kellman fastbreak layup to give the Lions a 41-35 advantage with 13:26 left.
The Hawks rallied and tied the game at 54 with 4:21 remaining after a free throw by Mark Buright and Chowan took a 61-59 lead after a Bethel 3-pointer with just over a minute remaining.
Mooney sank a pair at the free-throw line to tie the game at 61 with 53 seconds left. A Chris Williams jumper with 30 seconds remaining gave Chowan a 63-61 lead, but Mooney, who was 3-of-11 shooting, saved his best for last by draining a 3-pointer from the right wing to give Lincoln a 64-63 advantage with 16 seconds remaining.
The Hawks had a chance to take the lead, but Quinton McDuffie's jumper was blocked by Sharpe and forced a jump ball as the possession arrow went to Lincoln.
McGlone led Chowan (7-18, 1-12, 1-6) with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. McDuffie had 11 points and Bethel chipped in with 10 as the Hawks shot 51 percent (25-of-49).
