LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lincoln University football team had its 2012 Homecoming spoiled as Bowie State used strong second and third quarters to knock off the Lions, 45-9, in a CIAA Northern Division showdown at Lincoln University Stadium.
The Bulldogs (5-4 overall, 2-4 CIAA), who had 380 total yards of offense, scored 21 points in both the second and third to get the win as Lincoln was unable to slow down the Bowie State offense.
The Lions (1-8, 1-5), who finished with 356 total yards, fell behind, 3-0, after a Mario Diaz-Aviles 29-yard field, with 3:26 remaining in the opening quarter. However, Lincoln went 72 yards in seven plays as
Kyle Jaski (Escondido, Calif./Kenwood HS) booted a 22-yard field goal with 41 seconds left, tying the game at 3.
Bowie State scored on its next offensive possession and after stopping Lincoln, Curtis Pumphrey went 68 yards on a punt return to give the Bulldogs a 17-3 advantage with 6:53 remaining in the second quarter.
A Ramon Flowers 1-yard touchdown run extended the lead to 24-3 with 41 seconds left in the half, but the Lions marched 57 yards in just four plays as
Kester Lewis (Bowie, Md./Grady HS) caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from
Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) to cut the deficit to 24-9 right before halftime.
“I am glad that I got a chance to score the touchdown,” Lewis said. “The touchdown was a memorable moment in playing my final home game, but I would have wanted the team to get the victory.”
The Bulldogs used a 21-point third quarter to ride to the win.
Cook was 24-of-49 passing for 276 yards and a touchdown, while Matt Coston had a game-high nine catches for 109 yards. Lewis added five catches for 59 yards.
Gerald Swain (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township HS) finished with 65 yards on 12 carries and had six catches for 76 yards.
Tim Green (Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS) led Lincoln defensively with nine tackles, including five solo stops. He also had four quarterback hurries.
Tyahir Mitchell (Wilmington, DE/Howard HS) chipped in with eight tackles.
Tyrae Reid was 16-of-28 passing for 238 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Bowie State. Douglas McNeil had four catches for 112 yards, and Corwin Acker finished with 74 yards on six carries.
Pumphry recorded nine tackles and had three pass breakups to pace the Bulldogs defense. NKonyeasua Uwani finished with seven tackles and one quarterback hurry.
The Lions conclude the season with a 1 p.m., CIAA Northern Division game on Saturday, Nov. 3 in Murfreesboro, N.C.
