Box Score PETERSBURG, Va. – The Lincoln University football team got a 22-yard field goal by
Kyle Jaski (Escondido, Calif./Kenwood HS), but it wasn't enough to halt Virginia State as the Lions fell at Rogers Stadium, 23-3, on Saturday afternoon in a CIAA Northern Division contest.
Virginia State (4-4 overall, 3-2 CIAA), which won its fifth straight homecoming game, grabbed a 3-0 lead after Devonte Hunt booted a 40-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining in the opening quarter and the Trojans took a 10-0 advantage into the half when Tyler Wilson scored on a 10-yard run.
The Trojans, who finished with 363 total yards, extended the lead to 17-0 when Kenay Hawks scored on a 20-yard run with 26 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Lions (1-7, 1-4), who amassed 310 total yards, cut the deficit to 17-3 when Jaski's 22-yard field goal was good with 10:12 remaining. However, a muffed punt led to six Virginia State points as Perry Sutton recovered the loose ball in the end zone to give the Trojans a 23-3 advantage with 8:37 left.
Lincoln was forced to punt on its next drive and Virginia State took 7:23 off the clock to close out the game.
Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University), who has thrown for more than 300 yards in four of the eight games this season, was slowed down as he finished by going 30-of-49 passing for 259 yards.
Philip Jean-Juste (Miami, Fla. /North Miami Beach HS) added nine catches for a team-best 83 yards and
Gerald Swain (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township HS) caught six passes for 53 yards.
Dawan Marzett (Los Angeles, CA/Westchester HS) and
Brion Robinson (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook HS) combined for 20 tackles to pace the Lions defense. Marzett registered six solo stops, while Robinson had five.
Michael Adjei (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge HS) and
Charles Green (Coatesville, Pa./) each had eight tackles, while
Tim Green (Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS) finished with four tackles, including a sack.
The Lions gear up for Homecoming and Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 27 as Bowie State makes the trip to Lincoln University Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Bowie State fell on the road to Virginia Union, 37-13 on Saturday.
