Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology) sank a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left as the Lincoln University men's basketball team held off a late rally as the Lions defeated Chowan, 51-48, on Monday night in a CIAA Northern Division game at the Helms Center.
Jai Kellman (Brooklyn, N.Y./George Westinghouse HS) led the way offensively with 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) added 13 points, three rebounds and three assists, while Mooney chipped in with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists as the Lions (8-11 overall, 3-5 CIAA) were 18-of-43 from the field for 42 percent.
\The Lions broke an 18-all tie with 9:02 remaining and used a 15-7 run to close out the first half with a 33-25 advantage.
In the second half, Lincoln continued to push the lead and took a 44-33 advantage after a Kellman 3-pointer with 12:27 remaining. However, Chowan refused to go quietly as the Hawks used a 15-2 run to close the gap to 46-42 after a pair of Mark McGlone free throws with 5:18 left.
The Hawks closed the deficit to 48-47 with 47 seconds remaining and sent Mooney to the foul line for two shots. The senior sank the pair to give the Lions a 51-48 advantage with 20 seconds left. Chowan had a chance to tie the game with six seconds left as Lee Branscome missed a 3-pointer to give Lincoln the victory.
Chris Williams paced Chowan (6-14, 0-8) with 16 points and 14 rebounds. The Hawks shot 32 percent (19-of-59) from the floor.
The Lions open a five-game CIAA Northern Division homestand on Saturday, Jan. 28 against Bowie State at Manuel Rivero Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Catch all the action through live stats at:
