Lions start slow, fall to Vikings

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Lincoln University men's basketball team started slow on Saturday and fell to Elizabeth City State, 72-47, on Saturday in the CIAA Northern Division opener at the RL Vaughan Center.
 
Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology) and Kenny Sharpe (Chester, Pa./Elite Academy) each had 12 points. Chris Kinney (Washington, DC/Theodore Roosevelt SHS) led the way defensively with eight rebounds, while Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) had seven. The Lions (7-11 overall, 2-5 CIAA) were 17-of-54 from the floor for 32 percent.
 
The Vikings (9-8, 3-4) raced out to a 19-6 lead through the first 10 minutes and took a 32-25 advantage into the break. Elizabeth City State remained hot in the second half, out-scoring Lincoln, 40-22.
 
Angelo Sharpless paced the Vikings with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Omar Jones had 12 points and seven rebounds as Elizabeth City State shot 43 percent (26-of-60).
 
Lincoln concludes its four-game road trip 7:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 23 in Murfreesboro, N.C., as the Lions take on Chowan in a CIAA Northern Division contest at the Helm Center.
