Softball solid against West Chester

Game one box
Game two box

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (April 6, 2011) — Consider it a barometer for how far the team has come over the years.

Although Lincoln lost both of its games to West Chester (23-15), 13-0 and 8-0, but it left the softball powerhouse knowing that it had done considerably better than the blue and orange teams that had come before them.

The last time these schools met, the Lady Lions (2-14) were playing their first games in program history, which Lincoln lost, 48-0 and 30-0 on March 2, 2008.

"I loved my girls' attitude," second-year head coach Lynsey Grace said. "They had a never-quit mentality. We're a much different team from the last time we played West Chester. They were surprised by how far we'd come in such a short amount of time.

In the opening game on Wednesday, Lincoln recorded five hits including a 2-for-2 day by Erin Rucker (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights HS).

The Lady Lions trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the third, but the Lady Golden Rams put up 12 runs to jump out to the insurmountable lead.  Nicole Cruts and Abbt Block each had three RBIs, with Block's coming on a three-run homer.

The second game was much more of a pitcher's duel as the game was scoreless until the bottom of fourth when West Chester's Jessica Schuck singled home Cruts.  WCU added five in the fifth to take the game, 8-0.

Avree Morton (Uniondale, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS) logged Lincoln's lone hit, a single up the middle in the second inning.

Earlier in the game in the bottom of the second inning, LU student manager Nekia Morris alertly noticed that West Chester had batted out of order, saving two runs and and the two-out violation ended the inning.

Rucker (1-13) took the losses in both contests but had six strikeouts in the second game and four in the first.
