RALEIGH, N.C. (March 13, 2011) — The Lincoln University softball team did not disappoint in its opening weekend, going 2-4 over two days of play at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
Freshman infielder Avree Morton (Uniondale, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS) blasted two homers and driving in 10 runs over the weekend while sophomore Erin Rucker (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights HS) added one of her own. Rucker and DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester) each picked up a victory.
"I'm really proud of the girls," coach Lynsey Grace said. "This was not only the first time they got on the field since last season but the first time they got outside at all. We should have gone 3-3, but I'm very happy to have picked up these two wins."
On Saturday, after dropping the first game to Livingstone College, 6-5, the Lady Lions recovered from a 9-2 hole through 4-and-a-half innings against Saint Augustine's College to win 12-11 with Morton driving in Shira Miller (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) with a single to center.
LU, playing as the home team, scored four in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 10-9 lead entering the final inning, but the Lady Falcons tacked on two to regain control. The momentum, though, returned to the blue-and-orange. With one out, Mariah Liberty (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union HS) single, who came home on a single by Mosley. Miller pinch-ran for Mosley who got into scoring position on a single by Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS). Morton finally singled up the middle for the walk-off win.
On Sunday, Lincoln mercy-ruled Johnson C. Smith, 13-5. Both Liberty and Morton were a perfect 4-for-4. Morton had her second homer of the day and totaled six RBIs in the game.
