ECSU's early strikes too much for Lions

Quinton Hector and the Lions could not dig themselves out of an early hole.

Box Score

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (February 8, 2011) —
Fifteen points by Terron Jones (Bronx. NY/Fiorello H. LaGuardia HS) and 12 by Eugene Smith (West Palm Beach, Fl/PennWood ) could not combat the firepower of Elizabeth City State on Tuesday night at the R.L. Vaughn Center.

The Lions fell, 73-47, to the Vikings (13-8, 7-6 CIAA, 3-4 North) who shot 43.6 percent from the floor in the first half and sank four 3-pointers en route to opening a 41-18 lead at the break. Lincoln, meanwhile, shot just 27.3 percent and came up empty on nine trey tries.

In the second half, the Lions (2-18, 1-12 CIAA, 1-6 North) were much better from the floor, shooting at a 40-percent clip. After trailing by as many 31 points, LU reeled off 12 straight points over a period of 4:24 to get within 59-40 with 7:27 to go, the run capped with lay-in by Smith.

Lincoln got within 19 one more time, but a 6-0 run by the Vikings ended any thoughts of the unlikely comeback.

Elizabeth City State was led by 17 points by Rondy Tucker, one of three Viking players in double figures. Omar Jones and Deon Price each had six rebounds to go along with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Up next

Lincoln concludes its three-game CIAA road swing against Chowan University at 7:30 p.m. The Lions dropped the season's previous meeting, 75-62, at Manuel Rivero Hall on Jan. 24.
