RICHMOND, Va. (January 31, 2011) — Perhaps the worst thing to happen to the Lincoln men's basketball team Monday night was halftime.
After witnessing Virginia Union (9-6, 7-3 CIAA, 4-1 North) score the game's first 10 points and go up by 12 in the the first half, the Lions had chipped within five at the break. However, the Panthers regrouped, putting the Lions away, 68-51, at Barco-Stevens Hall.
Lincoln gave up the game's first 10 points and trailed 28-16 with 14:53 left in the half when Branden McDonald drained a 3. LU sophomore Quinton Hector (Schertz, Texas/Samuel Clemens HS) answered with a trey of his own, beginning a 7-0 run to close the first half at 28-23, VUU. The halted the momentum, as that was the closest LU got.
Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology) led Lincoln with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting while Eugene Smith (West Palm Beach, Fl/PennWood ) had 10 points and a team-high six rebounds despite battling foul problems most of the night.
Turnovers and the Panthers' ability to get to the line proved the difference. LU committed 22 turnovers compared to just 14 by VUU. Virginia Union also made 17 free throws to Lincoln's eight.
Virginia Union's Braxton Byerson led all scorers with 21 points behind 7-of-13 shooting and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.
