Lions look to send 17 seniors out with win

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.
– The Lincoln University will look to return to the win column on Saturday as the Lions seek to send 17 seniors out with a victory.

THE MATCHUP
Both teams come into today's contest off losses.
 
Lincoln enters the game at 2-5 overall and 2-3 in CIAA play after falling, 22-10, at home last Friday night against Bowie State.
 
The Lions defense spent a good portion of the game on the field as Bowie State controlled the clock by keeping the football for nearly the entire first quarter.
 
The Bulldogs had the ball for 40:26 to just 19:34 for Lincoln. Bowie State also gained 363 total yards of offense - 305 of those coming from the ground.
 
Bowie State jumped out to 10-0 lead early in the second quarter before Lincoln responded as Kyle Jaski (Escondido, Calif./Kenwood HS) booted a 29-yard field goal with 5:04 remaining in the first half.
 
The Bulldogs got a field goal right before halftime and took the 13-3 lead into the break.
 
In the third quarter, Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) scored on a 5-yard run to cut the deficit to 13-10, but turnovers cost the Lions as Bowie State scored the final nine points to get the 22-10 victory.
 
McElwee, who was named the CIAA Linebacker of the Week on Monday, finished with a season-high 19 tackles, including two for a loss of six yards.
 
On the season, McElwee anchors the Lions defense with 76 tackles, including two for a loss of 53 yards.

He has one interception - in a loss at Cheyney - and is third on the team in sacks with four for a loss of 19 yards.
  
Virginia State got a 3-yard touchdown from Jarred Battle to Alan Anderson for the only Trojans score as Elizabeth City State topped VSU, 28-7.
 
Battle finished the game by completing 15-of-26 passes for 95 yards and threw to eight different receivers.
 
In the second half against Elizabeth City State, the Trojans went three and out, punting on all six possessions as they failed to pick up any first downs. For the second straight week, Virginia State was shut out for the final three quarters.

THE SERIES
Virginia State leads the series, 7-0, after defeating Lincoln, 42-0, last season.
 
The Trojans raced out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on touchdown runs by Aaron Clark and Battle. Virginia State added to the lead with a 24-yard touchdown reception from Battle to Taditgus Lewis to take a 21-0 lead into the half.
 
Ian White scored on a 70-yard interception return and Clark reached the endzone on a 6-yard run to extend Virginia State's lead to 35-0 heading into the final quarter.
                                                                                                                                                           
The Trojans got a 10-yard TD run by Rahoo Walker in the final quarter to give Virginia State a 42-0 advantage.

UP NEXT
The Lions will be on the road for the final two games of the season as Lincoln travels to Lynchburg, Va., to take on Virginia University of Lynchburg on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff for that non-conference game is at 1 p.m.
