CHEYNEY, Pa. — It was a memorable night for the Lincoln University volleyball team as the Lady Lions won their first match of the season with a 3-0 sweep over rival Cheyney on Thursday night at Cope Hall.
“First and foremost I would like to thank God,” Lady Lions head coach Lynsey Grace said. “All of our hard work has finally paid off and come together. I am so happy and thankful for this team and they truly deserved this win.”
Lincoln (1-23) took the opening set, 25-21, and never trailed in the second, taking the set, 25-20. The Lady Lions raced out to 15-7 lead in the third set and didn't look back with a 25-14 win to take the match.
Cynthia Johnson (Randallstown, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) and
Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) paced Lincoln offensively with five kills each. DuBose recorded a team-high nine assists and was one shy of a double-double with 13 digs.
Zakiya Williams (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco Center for the Arts) led the way defensively with 18 digs and
Erin Rucker (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights HS) had 10.
Erika Bell (Owings Mills, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute HS) chipped in with nine digs.
Danielle Mines and Dejanirah McIver each finished with four kills to lead Cheyney (0-20). Denise Hill had seven assists and 11 digs, while Nichel Bryant and McIver registered 17 and 13 digs, respectively.
The Lady Lions return to CIAA Northern Division play as Lincoln plays host 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 14 at Manuel Rivero Hall against Chowan.
