THE MATCHUP
Lincoln (2-4 overall, 2-2 CIAA) is entering the game coming off its first homecoming victory since the program was brought back in 2008. The Lions handed Chowan a 31-15 loss at Avon Grove High School last Saturday.
After a 73-yard kickoff return by
Lance Rutledge (Waldorf, Md./Westlake HS), the Lions went 25 yards in four plays as
Gerald Swain (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township HS) scored on a 2-yard run. After Chowan answered and took a 7-6 lead, Matt Coston caught a 10-yard pass from
Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) to give Lincoln the lead for good at 12-6 with 18 seconds left in the opening quarter.
The Lions used a 19-point third quarter to get the win as Cook scored on runs of 1 and 12 yards, and
Daron Jones (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons HS) returned an interception 51 yards for a score. For Jones, it was his third interception return of the season (Kentucky State, Virginia Union and Chowan).
Bowie State (3-3, 2-2) enters the game after falling, 49-20, on Oct. 6 at Fairmont State.
The Bulldogs struck first as Keith Brown caught a 5-yard pass from Andre Johnson to give Bowie State a 6-0 lead with 5:59 remaining in the first quarter.
Despite the small lead, Fairmont State scored 42 unanswered points and took a 42-7 advantage early in the third quarter. Johnson scored on a 4-yard run in the third to cut the deficit to 42-13.
Bowie State got the game's final score as Clifton Budd connected with Reginald McIntyre for a touchdown with 1:13 left.
The Bulldogs lead the series with the Lions, 3-0, after knocking off Lincoln, 24-18, in Bowie, Md., last season.
In that game, Lincoln raced out to a 12-0 first-quarter lead as
D'Ante Smith (Bowie. Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) scored on a 26-yard run and
Anthony Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington HS) caught a 5-yard touchdown pass.
However, Bowie State rallied with nine points in the second quarter to close the gap to 12-9 before halftime.
In the third quarter,
Laquan Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram HS) scored on a 2-yard run to extend the lead to 18-9. But Bowie State scored the final 13 points to get the win.
