Lightning-shortened game goes to VFCC

Box Score

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — Entrenched in a defensive struggle, rookie goaltender Isata Panda (Bowie, Md/Charles H. Flowers) recorded 15 saves in a lightning-shortened contest against Valley Forge Christian College.

The resilient, breakout effort could not withstand the pressure, as Valley Forge Christian College (4-4) ultimately recorded the game winner in the 58th minute Wednesday afternoon at Lions Field. The game was called in the 74th minute with the Patriots leading, 3-0.

For LU (0-6), Charlise Cunningham (Long Island, N.Y./Bay Shore) generated multiple opportunities by taking the ball from midfield to within scoring range but was turned around by the Valley Forge Christian defense. Twice she was rewarded with corner kicks.

Ten minutes into the second half, Kelly Thibeau (Laurel, De./Laurel Senior High) nearly had a breakaway opportunity but the defenders closed quickly, nullifying the chance before she could get off a shot attempt.

The injuries that have hampered the Lady Lions all year exacted their toll once more, taxing the defense to the breaking point. Early in the second, Nailah Davidson (Queens, NY, HSLEAPS)n went down with a leg injury and would not return. Forward Gabrielle Jones (Philadelphia, Pa./Bodine) and midfielder Joy Floyd (Logan Township, N.J./Kingsway Regional) missed extended periods of time but would reenter.

In the 58th minute with the Lady Lions down to nine players, Sarah Stark snuck one past Panda to end the scoreless tie. With 21 minutes remaining, Chelsea Mason provided insurance on a strike from 15 yards out, finding the lower-left-hand corner. The Patriots added another before the referees called the game due to lightning.

Still though, the defensive effort was encouraging as Panda and four newcomers in the backline appeared to gel. The three goals allowed were the fewest of the season
