PETERSBURG, Va. — The Lady Lions suffered a pair of setbacks to Virginia State Saturday, dropping both contests, 9-1.
In the opening game, Lincoln cut into a 3-0 hole when Sasha Evans (Hampton, VA/Phoebus) (Hampton, VA, Phoebus) flew out to the right fielder and Tanina Cook (Landover, MD/Charles Herbert Flowers) (Landover, MD, Charles Herbert Flowers) came home from third.
Taylor Hines (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood) (Beachwood, OH, Beachwood) got the loss, allowing six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
In the second game, VSU notched runs in the first and second inning but a four-run third broke the game open, including a 2-run inside-the-park homer by Brittani Pitman. LU pitcher Erin Rucker (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights HS) (Shaker Heights, MD, Shaker Heights ) helped her own cause with LU's lone run in the top of the fourth on an RBI double scoring Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) (Salisbury, MD, Parkside).
Rucker got the loss allowing 9 runs, but only four were earned as the defense committed an uncharacteristic five errors. Geneva Washington earned the complete-game victory, giving up just two hits.
