LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — It had been a while, but yet it seemed so easy.
The Lincoln University softball team (4-7) swept Gallaudet University, 14-1 and 13-5, Saturday at the Oxford Athletic Association to earn its first sweep since March 24 of last year when the Lady Lions knocked off Rosemont College. The wins were salso the team's first home victories in program history.
LU's first-year-coach Lynsey Grace has her team poised to surpass last year's win total of five as she needs just one win over the next three weeks to equal that mark.
Lincoln scored five runs in the first with the big blasts coming from DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester) (Chester, Pa./Chester) and Mariah Liberty (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union HS) (Vermont), each booming RBI doubles. Mosley found the right-center gap in the third, scoring Tanina Cook (Landover, MD/Charles Herbert Flowers) (Landover, Md./Charles H. Flowers) for Lincoln's first of nine runs in that inning. Later in the frame, Mosley would have an 2 RBI single, finishing game one 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
Taylor Hines (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood) (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood) picked up her third win by allowing just one run and two hits over five innings.
In the second game, LU scored 10 runs in the second, all of which with two outs. Collene Cumberbatch (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway ) (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) drew what appeared to be a harmless, bases-empty walk with two down, but Gallaudet pitchers suddenly could not find the plate. The Lady Lions engaged in a trotting carousel, scoring five runs without a hit. Liberty's rocket to third gave LU its first hit of the game and a 7-0 edge.
Gallaudet (0-9) would answer when Michelin Barron hit a deep fly over the head of Lincoln right fielder Alexandra Lobban (Upper Marlboro,MD) (Upper Marlboro, Md./Charles H. Flowers) for an inside the parker.
Unabated, Lincoln invoked the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth when Erin Rucker (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights HS) (Shaker Heights,Ohio/Shaker Heights) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth. Rucker picked up the win, her first of 2009. Mosley had another two hits and two more RBIs in game two.
LU hosts Rosemont College on March 30 at 3 p.m. at the Oxford Athletic Association.
