LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — The night began in anticipation of what Dante Blanton-Holcombe (Baltimore, MD/Dunbar) (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) was set to accomplish, but it was Damian Hyman (Bronx, NY/Harry S. Truman) (Bronx, N.Y./Alfred State College) who dazzled the audience.
Needing just one point to reach 1,000 for his career, Blanton-Holcombe delivered with an acrobatic lay-up in transition for two of his 10 points. The rest of the night was about Hyman's career effort, recording seven first-half treys as he finished with 29 points.
Still, though, despite the festive start, Lincoln (2-18) fell in overtime to Virginia Union (16-6), 81-72 Thursday night at Manuel Rivero Hall as Panthers raged back from a 13-point deficit to tie the game with five seconds left and put the game away with a 12-0 run in the extra period.
This was Lincoln's third loss in overtime this season.
In the first half, Hyman connected on six-consecutive trey attempts, as LU went into halftime leading 38-25.
Virginia Union was equally torrid in the second half, but Hyman connected on another three to stretch the advantage to 47-34 with 14:54 on the clock.
With 10 minutes left, the score was 56-43 after two baskets by Ladaye Johnson (Wilmington, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) (Hodgson Vo-Tech) and a dunk by Blanton-Holcombe that made the crowd go wild.
Virginia Union, however, made their comeback after tying the game up twice and forcing the game into overtime at 64-64 when Brandon Bryerson got an off-balance lay-up to go off the left wing.
