Game Notes: Week 9 Saint Paul's

Game Notes

ON TAP:
Lincoln University and Saint Paul's College appear to be a well-matched team. Both schools enter this game at 1-7. The Lions defeated Cheyney University, 12-0, in the season opener on Sep. 5, while the Tigers beat Livingstone College on Sep. 25, 27-6. This is LU's first home game since Saint Augustine's College visited southeastern Pennsylvania on Sept. 25. The Lions played a total of four-straight road games including one against an NCAA Division I-FCS opponent, rival Howard University.

THE SERIES: Lincoln is 16-5 all-time against the Tigers but has dropped the only meetings since the reinstatement of the football program. In 2008, LU lost 23-20 at Avon Grove High School, and last year, SPC prevailed 16-10. In that game, Lincoln was picked off eight times and fumbled the ball away once in South Hill, Va. D'Ante Smith (Bowie. Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) led Lincoln with 60 rushing yards. Lincoln's lone score was a four-yard pass from Laquan Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram HS) to departed receiver Trey Thomas (Canton, GA/Woodstock) midway through the third quarter that brought Lincoln within 7-6. Saint Paul's though, tacked on a safety on the ensuing PAT try and added a touchdown in the fourth for the win.

ABOUT SAINT PAUL'S COLLEGE: The Tigers are 1-7 and have dropped four-straight games, but they have been very competitive. Last week, the Tigers fell to Virginia Union, 38-29, and on Oct. 2, Bowie State needed overtime to escape with a 16-10 win. Offensively, Saint Paul's is averaging just 210 yards per game but they have put up points. Wide receiver Emory Addison is the go-to guy. He has 33 catches for 404 yards and three touchdowns while missing one game this season. Osmund Brown has 21 grabs and a team-high four touchdowns. Defensively, the Tigers have been vulnerable on the ground, allowing more than 200 yards per game. Sophomore strong safety Domonic Tolson leads a stout pass defense. He leads SPC in tackles (58) and interceptions (three).

LINCOLN LAST WEEK:
Lincoln struggled mightily against Virginia State, which leads the CIAA's North Division. The Lions fell behind early, 14-0 en route to a 42-0 loss. LU did move the football, but four trips inside the red zone came away empty. A major reason for that was the absence of quarterback Laquan Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram HS). He separated his throwing shoulder in the waning moments against Bowie State and will be sidelined the rest of the year. In his stead, Aaron Thomas (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area HS) and Steven Torres (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton HS) filled in admirably and actually recorded more passing yards than the Trojans, 155-145. Defensively, Brandon McElwee (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City Junior and Senior HS) recorded his first double-digit tackle game of the season with 10 stops including 2.5 for losses and a sack. Brucelee Sterile (Miami, Fla./North Miami Beach HS) had a team-high 13 tackles and is deserving for consideration as an All-American.

ALL-AMERICA CONSIDERATION:
Brucelee Sterile (Miami, Fla./North Miami Beach HS) is deserving of serious consideration for All-America honors. He is tied for second in the CIAA with 74 tackles and 28th in the nation with a 9.25 stops-per-game average including double-digit tackles in six games. He had 13 last week against Virginia State.

UP NEXT: Lincoln concludes 2010 with Senior Day as Elizabeth City State comes to Avon Grove High School for the 1 p.m. kickoff. The Lions and Vikings had not met until Lincoln brought back football in 2008, and ECSU, a CIAA powerhouse, has taken both meetings. Last year, the Lions fell 54-18. The Vikings started quickly, recording the game's first 27 points before the defense forced a safety. Both of LU's touchdowns came in the third quarter. Laquan Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram HS) found Trey Thomas (Canton, GA/Woodstock) for a 13-yard strike, and the second was a 30-yarder from Williams to Kareem Dennis (Philadelphia, PA/Lincoln).
