Game Notes

ON TAP:
Lincoln University travels to Virginia State University to take on the Trojans at 1:30 p.m. Virginia State leads the CIAA North with a 5-2 record following a surprising 15-10 victory over Elizabeth City State last week. This will be the Lions' final road game before wrapping up the season with consecutive home games to conclude 2010. ABOUT VIRGINIA STATE: The Trojans beat Elizabeth City State, 15-10, to assume control of the CIAA North. VSU has just one conference loss, a 21-14 defeat to Fayetteville State University on Oct. 9. With a 16-15 victory the week before over Bowie State, the Trojans earned the tie-breaker in the head-to-head match-up in the race to win the division. The credit belongs to their defense. They boast the No. 3 scoring defense and No. 4 total defense. IN fact, they've surrendered more than 21 points just once, and that was 51 to Division I Norfolk State.

LINCOLN LAST WEEK:
In each of the Lions' three conference road games, they've started extremely well. Finishing has been the problem. Last week against Bowie State, the Lions earned a 12-0 lead midway through the first quarter. The momentum began to swing on a safety. LU was flagged for holding on a punt following a fourth-and-1 stop from its own seven-yard line. Bowie State got the ball back on the free kick and a 40-yard pass play to Gregory Jackson set up a short touchdown pass to Kevin James. Lincoln forced four turnovers – all fumbles – including a big one on Bowie State's start of the third quarter. Lincoln marched down the field for a touchdown to go ahead 18-9, but Bowie State would score the game's final 15 points to swipe a victory on its Homecoming.

STERILE-IZE:
Brucelee Sterile (Miami, Fla./North Miami Beach HS) ranks 47th in the country and fourth in the CIAA with 16 tackles. He has 11 stops a week ago and how has double-digit tackles in three of the last four games. He now has reached the feat 12 times in his career and 4 times in 2010. He recorded a season-high 16 stops against Howard University on Oct. 1.

BAILEY HONORED:
Jairon Bailey (Compton, Calif./Locke) was rewarded for a monster performance Saturday against Bowie State, earning the CIAA Defensive Back of the Week award. Bailey had a game-high 3.5 tackles for loss with a season-high eight stops for Lincoln against Bowie State. He had a sack for a loss of nine yards and a pass break-up to prevent a touchdown. He also forced a fumble, which he recovered in the 24-18 loss to the Bulldogs. The senior safety/linebacker hybrid is second on LU in tackles (45) and stops for loss (8.5). His three pass break-ups are tied for a team high. A transfer from Southwest Community College in Los Angeles, he has enjoying a break-out season in just his second and final campaign in orange and blue. He is now just three wrap-ups shy of equaling the 48 he had in 2009 and already surpassed the 1.5 tackles for loss. Bailey is the fifth CIAA honoree for the Lions and the first defensive back in the team's first year as an NCAA and CIAA member. He is 7 tackles shy of 100.

SMITH ENJOYS HOMECOMING:
The Bowie native, On a fourth-and-11 on Lincoln's first drive, D'Ante Smith (Bowie. Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) scampered 26 yards for the touchdown, his longest of the season. He missed last year's match-up with the bulldogs with a tweaked hamstring.

UP NEXT:
LU finally plays a home game, a showdown with Saint Paul's College. Its only game at Avon Grove the season was against Saint Augustine's College on Sep. 25. Saturday's game will be Homecoming. Lincoln is 16-5 all-time against the Tigers but has dropped the only meetings since the reinstatement of the football program. In 2008, LU lost 23-20 at Avon Grove High School, and last year, SPC prevailed 16-10. In that game, Lincoln was picked off eight times and fumbled the ball away once in South Hill, Va. Smith led Lincoln with 60 rushing yards. Lincoln's lone score was a four-yard pass from Laquan Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram HS) to departed receiver Trey Thomas (Canton, GA/Woodstock) midway through the third quarter that brought Lincoln within 7-6. Saint Paul's though, tacked on a safety on the ensuing PAT try and added a touchdown in the fourth for the win.
