Coston, Bishop qualify for IC4As

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Sophomore runner Matthew Coston (Brooklyn, NY, Dover) and Anthony Bishop (Philadelphia, PA, Martin Luther King) qualified for the IC4As with qualifying times in the 800 meters and 60 meters, respectively at the University of Maryland Invitational Saturday.

 

Coston's time of 1 minute, 54.11 seconds won the event and easily qualified him for the prestigious events, needing just a 1:54.90. The win also earned 10 of Lincoln's points, helping Lincoln place seventh in a field comprised of some major Division I schools.

 

Bishop took second in the 60-meters but earned first-place points with a time of 6.89 because James Taylor ran unattached. He ran a 6.89. They needed a 6.98 to qualify for the IC4As, which will be held in Boston in March. Rushane Scott (Allentown, PA, William Allen), also competing in the 60-meters, placed fifth and narrowly missed the qualifying time with a 7.03, but he did earn a crucial five team points.

 

Lincoln had 55 points while Norfolk State's 107.50 took tdhe team crown. The host Terps 83.50 were second, American (68.50) was third, and Lynchburg (63) and Lincoln completed the top five. Livingstone College, the other CIAA team competing, was 12th with 12 team points.

 

Other individual performances had efforts as LU tries to get back into form following the break between semesters. Diedre Mcloud finished third in the 400 meters and earned eight points because a runner competed unattached.

 

Aaron Hunter (Sharon Hill, PA, Academy Park) 22 feet, five inch long jump placed fifth.

 

In the 4x400-meter relay, Coston, Bishop, Randy Dawkins (Jamaica) and Alex Wright (Brooklyn, NY, John Dewey) were third in 3 minutes, 21.34 seconds behind Delaware State and Norfolk State. DSU ran a 3:13.77.
