LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA — Lincoln University hung with the University of District Columbia but could not overcome 31 turnovers in a 67-63 loss Monday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.
Lincoln led 29-13 following a basket by Ivana Whitfield (Windsor, CT/Metropolitican LC) (Windsor, CT, Metropolitan LC) with 2:52 remaining, in the first half but UDC, a team that qualified for the NCAA tournament last year, rallied.
Lincoln was led by sophomore Sharay Dubose's (Salisbury, MD, Parkside) 19 points and six rebounds en route to All-Tournament team honors. She had 13 points and 11 rebounds in the 49-46 win over Concordia College (NY) Sunday. Tiffany Church paced the Lady Firebirds as she had 24 points with 11 of those points coming from the charity stripe.
DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester) (Chester, PA, Chester) was also named to the All-Tournament team. The junior guard had 17 points and four rebounds and recorded Lincoln's game-winning bucket Sunday.
Alease Tabb (Brooklyn, NY/Middle College High School) (Brooklyn, NY, Middle College) and Danielle Smallwood (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic) (Philadelphia, PA, West Catholic) also offered eight points.
Tabb capped a 12-0 Lincoln run with a short jumper to give Lincoln a 19-9 advantage with nine minutes remaining in the first half. The run began when senior Chanelle Harris (Philadelphia, PA/Penn Wood) (Philadelphia, PA, Penn Wood) stole a pass under the LU basket and dished to Mosley, tying the game at nine.
Dubose gave the Lady Lions the lead shortly afterward with a drive to the basket from the top of the key. She hit the shot, drew contact and knocked down the free throw for a 12-9 LU lead at 12:55.
Lincoln doubled up on the Lady Firebirds when Dubose drained a deep three-pointer for a 24-12 advantage with just more than four minutes remaining.
UDC cut the deficit to single digits when Church knocked down free throws with 49 seconds remaining, putting UDC in a 30-22 hole. The UDC added another bucket before half for a 30-24 score at intermission. LU shot 63 percent from the field in the first half.
After the half, UDC trimmed the deficit to three, Mosley halted the momentum with a three to put Lincoln up 35-32. The Lady Firebirds responded with consecutive threes on their own.
Nicole Cooper knocked down the second and was fouled to tie the game at 35 apiece but missed a free throw that would have given UDC its first lead since the first minutes of the game.
Stacy Griffith got UDC the lead on the next trip down the floor by converting a three-point opportunity. UDC would not trail the rest of the game.
UDC stretched it to 10 when Lillian McGill laid in an inbounds pass underneath for a 55-45 advantage. Tabb cut the deficit to five with 4:28 left after a nice move in the block, but LU Had difficulty putting together a run as the turnover problems mounted.
With three minutes left, Mosley had the opportunity to cut the deficit to four but missed the front end of a one-and-one. On LU's next trip, the ball would not fall on an LU drive as the ball bounced out.
Smallwood scored Lincoln's final six points.
