BOWIE, MD. (January 6, 2008) – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team battled Bowie State evenly for 32 minutes, trailing by five points with eight minutes remaining before dropping an 85-55 decision Tuesday evening at A.C. Jordan Arena. (BOXSCORE)
In a game featuring eight lead changes and seven ties, Lincoln sophomore DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA, Chester) paced Lincoln with her sixth career double (team-high 17 points, 11 rebounds). Mosley has scored in double figures in 26 of her 33 career games. Freshman Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, MD, Parkside) missed her second career double-double by finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds. DuBose has scored in double figures in 12 of Lincoln's 13 games this season.
Also, playing prominent roles for Lincoln was freshman Alease Tabb (Brooklyn, NY, Middle College High School) established career highs in points (eight) and rebounds (six). Junior Chanelle Harris (Philadelphia, PA, Penn Wood) added six rebounds and six assists. Senior Tanina Cook (Landover, MD, Charles H. Flowers), playing in her home county contributed six points and five rebounds.
Lincoln displayed a lot of heart in rallying from an early 11-point deficit to grab a pair of one-point leads (41-40 with 13:30 remaining following a Tabb basket and 43-42 with 13:00 left on a DuBose basket) in the second half. The Lady Lions and Bowie State were tied, 45-45, with 11:34 remaining following another DuBose basket. Lincoln was in perfect position to pull the upset when it trailed, 55-50 with 8:23 remaining.
A basket by sophomore Keonie Morrisey (Washington, D.C., Frederick Douglas) gave Lincoln its largest advantage of the game, 14-11, with 10:11 remaining in the first half. Mosley and DuBose combined for Lincoln's first eight points of the game. Mosley had the gym buzzing with a dizzying barrage of baskets that bridged the first and second halves.
Mosley ended the first half by knocking down a 3-pointer off of a Cook assist with 35 seconds remaining. That pulled Lincoln to within, 31-25, at intermission. Mosley, who made 7-of-12 shots during the game, began the second half by knocking down a 3-pointer, scoring a layup and making another 3-pointer. By the time Mosley finished her assault on the basket, she had scored 11 straight points for Lincoln. The Lady Lions were staring at a 36-33 deficit four minutes into the second half.
For the next eight minutes, Bowie State and Lincoln traded baskets and the lead. Lincoln was able to hang with Bowie on the strength of 50 percent shooting in the second half (12-for-24). During the first half, Lincoln received at least one basket from eight players. Lincoln also won the rebounding battle, 43-41.
Bowie State, the preseason favorite to win the CIAA Eastern Division, placed five players in double figures led by junior Bianca Lee's 19 points and sophomore Teaunsha Robinson's 18 points.
Lincoln and Bowie State will meet again at Rivero Hall on Thursday February 12. The Lady Lions continue their extended road trip when they visit Shaw University in Raleigh (N.C.) Thursday evening for a 5:30 p.m. start. Bowie State's next game is Saturday evening at home against Shaw, also at 5:30 p.m.
