LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (September 3, 2008) – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania volleyball team saw its terrific rally end with a 3-2 defeat to Goldey Beacom College Wednesday evening at Manuel Rivero Hall. (BOXSCORE)
Trailing, 2-1, Lincoln showed tremendous character in forcing a fifth game, but ultimately the Lady Lions fell short, 26-28, 25-16, 25-18, 22-25, 15-9. Lincoln saw its overall record fall to 1-3 while Goldey Beacom's mark improved to 1-0.
For Lincoln, the combination of senior health science major Donneisha Smith (Milwaukee, WI/Harold S. Vincent) (Milwaukee, WI/Harold S. Vincent) and junior biology major Noel Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) combined for 20 kills. Smith had a season-high 12 kills to go along with seven digs and six service aces. Webster added eight kills and three blocks. Both players finished the game with positive hitting percentages.
Sophomore music education major Lia Hubbard (Farrell, PA/Farrell) (Farrell, PA/Farrell) finished with a season-high 23 assists. She also recorded her 400th career assist during the match. Hubbard also contributed four digs. Lincoln is 4-2 when Hubbard finishes with 20 or more kills.
Senior journalism major Jordean Matthews (Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) (Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) and senior education major Lindsey Wilson (Aliquippa, PA/Aliquippa) (Aliquippa, PA/Aliquippa) enjoyed solid performances, finishing with four kills each. Wilson had seven digs and Matthews added five digs and three blocks. Junior psychology major Kenyatta Austin (Newark, NJ/Immaculate Conception) (Newark, NJ/Immaculate Conception) finished with three blocks and three kills. Sophomore business management major Raisa Jones (Philadelphia, PA/Masterman) (Philadelphia, PA/Masterman) was effective with her serve.
The Lady Lions opened by wining a tight 28-26 decision in the first game. However, the visiting Lightning answered by taking the next two games. However, the Lady Lions opened the fourth game strong by racing to a 7-2 lead. Behind Smith's three consecutive aces, Lincoln's advantage swelled to 20-13. Goldey Beacom rallied and pulled to within one point on three different occasion before Webster closed the game with a kill to force a decisive fifth game.
The fifth game belonged to Goldey Beacom as it sprinted to a 6-1 lead by scoring five consecutive points. Lincoln did close to within, 8-4, but that would be as close as it would get.
Amanda Mills led Goldey Beacom with seven kills. Roni Shaner recorded 17 assists and six service aces. Chantal Pierre finished with six kills and three blocks.
Lincoln returns to action Friday afternoon when it meets Pitt.-Johnstown and Bluefield State as part of the Davis&Elkins Invitational. The Lady Lions play UPJ at 1:00 p.m. and Bluefield State at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, the Lady Lions will meet Central State at 11:00 a.m. and host Davis & Elkins at 1:00 p.m.
