Virginia State pulls away from Lincoln, 3-1

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (August 31, 2008) – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania volleyball team ran out of steam in a 3-1 loss to Virginia State University Sunday morning at Manuel Rivero Hall.

 

The visiting Trojans earned their first victory of the 2008 season by winning, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 25-14. Virginia State (1-4 overall) took control over the final two games after the Lions (0-2) tied the match at 1-1 after a victory in the second game.

 

Senior Donneisha Smith (Milwaukee, WI/Harold S. Vincent) paced the Lions with eight digs, seven kills and four service aces. Sophomore Lia Hubabrd had 17 assists. Senior Jordean Matthews (Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) and junior Noel Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) had four kills each. Senior Lindsey Wilson (Aliquippa, PA/Aliquippa) also finished with eight digs.

 

Lincoln roared to a 9-2 lead in the second game and rode the momentum of that strong start to victory. In the second game, Smith had four of her seven kills and Wilson had all three of her service aces.

 

Virginia State finished with 38 kills. Jasmine Davis had nine kills while Jade Austin and Brittany Mitchell-El added eight kills each. Reneisha Hill finished with 24 assists. Mitchell-El also had 14 digs.

 

Lincoln returns to action Tuesday evening when it travels to Valley Forge Christian College for a 7:00 p.m. contest. Virginia State's next game is Wednesday at home against Saint Paul's College.
