LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (March 15, 2008) – Melvin Robinson (Wilmington, DE/William Penn) was involved the biggest plays for the Lincoln University of Pennsylvania baseball team during a 9-8 victory (BOXSCORE) and a 10-10 tie (BOXSCORE) against Saint Paul's College Saturday afternoon.
Robinson beat out a potential double-play ball in the bottom of the seventh inning that allowed Omar Glinton (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Augustine's) to cross the plate with the winning run. It was Lincoln's first victory of the 2008 season. In the nightcap, Robinson scored what proved to be the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The game was called because of darkness with the teams deadlocked. This was the third game this season in which Lincoln had called because of darkness.
Lincoln (1-13-1 overall) improved to 6-0 all-time against Saint Paul's by showing plenty of character and resiliency after watching SPC rally from large deficits to take a lead late in the game. In the opening game, SPC scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game, 8-8. The pesky Tigers scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to overcome a 9-5 deficit to grab a 10-9 lead.
The hitting star for Lincoln in the second game was Michael Greenwood (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College), who delivered three hits and drove in a career best five runs. Harvey Barnes (Richmond, VA/Peekskill), Josh Graber (Baltimore, MD/Our Lady of Mt. Carmel) and Robinson had two hits each for Lincoln in the nightcap. The Lions scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to grab a quick 5-0 lead. Robinson began the bottom of the seventh with a walk. Robinson stole second and scored on Graber's RBI single.
After taking control of the first game with a five-run fourth inning, Lincoln had to rally. Glinton began the bottom of the seventh inning with a single. After getting to third base with one out, Robinson's speed and hustle proved to be the difference for Lincoln.
The Lions overcame an early 3-0 deficit with an explosive bottom of the fourth inning. Lincoln's uprising featured five consecutive doubles by Graber, Josiah Barnes (Philadelphia, PA/Overbrook), Percy Bullock (Pittsburgh, PA/Susquehanna Twp.), Harvey Barnes (Richmond, VA/Peekskill) and Peter S. Reyes (Bronx, NY/Environmental Studies).
Glinton and Graber had three hits each for Lincoln in the opening game. Josiah Barnes (Philadelphia, PA/Overbrook) drove in three runs on his two hits. Also enjoying multi-hit games for Lincoln were Reyes, Josiah Barnes (Philadelphia, PA/Overbrook) and Joe Kruemmer (Middletown, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech). Saint Paul's erased an 8-5 deficit by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Lincoln returns to action Sunday afternoon when it hosts St. John Fisher College in a doubleheader beginning at noon. This will be the first meeting in school history between the two schools. St. John Fisher, members of the Empire 8 Conference, participated in the 2007 NCAA Division III tournament.
