OXFORD, PA. (March 12, 2008) – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania softball team continued to show improvement and make history during a pair of losses to Galaudet University Wednesday night at the Oxford A.A. Softball Complex.
Despite playing in brutal cold and windy conditions, Tanina Cook (Landover, MD/Charles H. Flowers) had three hits over the two games, including two in the second game. Lincoln lost the first game, 26-1 and the second game, 24-4, to drop to 0-4 in its inaugural varsity softball season. Gallaudet won its fourth consecutive game to improve to 4-3-1. Lincoln made its first night game in school history one to remember as it scored a season-high four runs, batted around for the first time in program history during a three-run third inning highlighted by RBIs from Cook and Alisa Davis (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester County Tech). Scoring for Lincoln in the second game were Jasmine Baxter (Washington, D.C./McKinley Tech), DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester) and Cook twice. Sasha Evans (Hampton, VA/Phoebus) and Latoya Milstrey (Union, NJ/Union) were strong defensively for the Lions. Shanisse Conway (Westhampton Beach, CA/Westhampton Beach) made her first career start for the Lions.
In the first game, Capri Burnett (Philadelphia, PA/Roxborough) scored the first run in program history in the bottom of the second inning. Burnett, who started the inning when she reached on an error, crossed the plate after Davis was safe on an error. Burnett stole second. Cook had Lincoln's only hit of the opening game. Milstrey got nine ground ball outs in each game.
This is the first of two meetings between Lincoln and Gallaudet. The Lions visit the Bison in the nation's capital on Thursday April 24.
Gallaudet's Colleen Caverly, who earned the winning decision in the nightcap, drove in six runs in the second game. In the opening game, winning pitcher Colleen Tighe and Caitlin Mosholder drove in four runs each to lead the Bison. Leadoff batter Alicia Blazer homered in each game for Gallaudet.
Lincoln returns to action Thursday afternoon when it hosts Virginia State University beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Oxford A.A. Softball Complex.
