Lincoln's rally falls short against Delaware Valley

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (January 30, 2008) – Lincoln University of Pennsylvania senior Asha Atkinson (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) and sophomore Chanelle Harris (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) recorded double-doubles during a tough 69-64 defeat to Delaware Valley College Wednesday night at Manuel Rivero Hall in women's basketball action. (BOXSCORE)

Atkinson finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds for her 20th career double-double. It was Atkinson's 52 career game reaching double digits in scoring. Meanwhile, Harris was phenomenal for the short-handed Lions.

Harris, a nominee for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team, finished two assists shy of a triple-double. She scored 12 points, snatched a career-best 13 rebounds and handed out eight assists. Junior Tanina Cook (Landover, MD/Charles H. Flowers) added 14 points and nine rebounds.

Three Lincoln players including freshman DeJuana Mosley, Lincoln's leading scorer, did not dress because of the flu. That left Lincoln coach Andy Haman with seven available players. Freshman Keonnie Morrisey and junior Angelle Green (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) each finished with a career-high eight points. Cook, Atkinson, and Harris played the entire 40 minutes.

Delaware Valley (9-9) placed four players in double figures highlighted by Moira Donahue's 19 points. Also reaching double digits for the Aggies were Kim Vennera (16 points), Brittany Battinieri (15 points, seven rebounds) and Brooke Dittmar (10 points, nine rebounds).

Trailing 65-53 with five minutes, 55 seconds remaining, the Lions showed a lot of heart in slicing their deficit to 67-64 with 2:28 remaining. Unfortunately, Lincoln could not get any closer despite having three opportunities to get closer.

Latoya Thompson (York, PA/William Penn) opened the game with a 3-pointer to give Lincoln its only lead of the game, 3-0. The Aggies responded with consecutive 3-pointers from Donahue and Vennera gave them a 6-3 lead they would not relinquish. Del Val led, 39-29, at intermission on the strength of a 9-for-18 effort from 3-point distance in the opening 20 minutes.

Lincoln dropped to 1-2 on its current five-game home stand. The Lions will be back in action Saturday afternoon when they host Newport News Apprentice School at 2:00 p.m.
