LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (January 22, 2008) – DeJuana Mosley scored 19 points and Tanina Cook (Landover, MD/Charles H. Flowers) notched her fourth career double-double, but it wasn't enough as the Lincoln University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team dropped a 63-45 decision to Elizabeth City State University Tuesday evening at Manuel Rivero Hall. (BOXSCORE)
Cook added 11 points and 11 rebounds. It was Cook's second consecutive game recording at least 10 rebounds. Senior Sharell McMillan (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) added eight points for Lincoln. Sophomore Chanelle Harris (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood), a nominee for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team sponsored by CoSIDA, contributed five assists and three steals.
Playing the first game of a five-game home stand and first home game in 47 days, the Lions (3-8) struggled with their shooting throughout the game, making 21 percent of their shots (15-for-69). Lincoln's defense forced 36 turnovers. Cook finished with a team-high four steals.
Elizabeth City State (8-8) was led by Division II National Player of the Year Candidate Celeste Trahan, who recorded her 77th career double-double in 101 games. Trahan finished with game highs of 27 points and 18 rebounds. Trahan, who leads Division II in rebounding and is eighth in scoring, made 9-of-16 shots from the field and 9-of-10 from the foul line. April Whitaker added 13 rebounds for the Vikings, who swept the season series from Lincoln. Whitaker also scored seven points.
The Vikings took advantage of a pair of Lincoln scoring droughts. After taking an early, 5-3 lead on a McMillan jumper with 16 minutes, 43 seconds remaining in the first half. The Vikings scored 15 consecutive points over the next 8:43 to open an 18-5 advantage. However, the feisty Lions rallied behind some sharp 3-point shooting. Lincoln made all four of its first half 3-pointers during a 3-minute span as part of a 14-4 run that pulled the Lions to within, 22-19, with 3:54 remaining.
Cook's basket with 18:05 remaining in the game pulled Lincoln to within, 32-26. Unfortunately for the Lions, that would be as close as they would get. Behind Trahan, who scored 12 points, ECSU went on a 14-4 run to open a 46-30 lead with 13:10 remaining. Lincoln fought back behind Mosley, who made consecutive 3-pointers to start a 10-2 burst that pulled the Lions to within, 48-40 with 10:31 remaining.
Lincoln returns to action Saturday afternoon when it finishes the season series against Chestnut Hill College beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Rivero Hall.
