LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (September 30, 2007) – Lincoln University of Pennsylvania junior keeper Tanina Cook made a career-high 21 saves, but it wasn't enough as Bryn Mawr scored four goals in the final 10 minutes to pull away for a 6-1 victory Sunday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)
The Lions (0-9-3) battled visiting Bryn Mawr tough for 80 minutes before running out of steam against the Owls (4-6-1). It was Bryn Mawr's second victory over the Lions this season. Bryn Mawr defeated Lincoln, 7-1, in the consolation game of the Bryn Mawr tournament back on September 2.
However, this contest was much different from the teams' earlier meeting. In that game, Bryn Mawr scored the first three goals of the match and held a 4-1 advantage at halftime. In this game, after Bryn Mawr's Wallis Romzek scored off a scramble in front of the net from a corner kick in the 14th minute, Lincoln got even two minutes later.
Freshman Shaynita Blanchard continued her assault on the women's soccer record book when she scored her sixth goal of the year on a breakaway that evened the game, 1-1 early in the first half. Blanchard is one goal behind Tia Redden, who played from 2004-2006, for the women's soccer record for goals in a season. Redden holds the mark with seven goals during the 2005 season. Blanchard leads the Lions in goals with six, assists with three and points with 15.
Bryn Mawr took the lead for good late in the first half when Patricia Lebron finished off a cross from Emily Wiseman in the 42nd minute.
Lincoln had some opportunities to get even in the second half, but shots by Antonia Jones, Blanchard and Stephenie Poole sailed wide of the net. Also turning in great performances for the Lions were freshman Javonni Costello, junior Collene Cumberbatch, junior Chianne Ashman, sophomore Donneisha Anderson, sophomore Leslie Jefferson, senior Salena Young and freshman Joy Floyd.
Bryn Mawr put the game away by using goals from Hope Fillingim (80th minute), Akua Nyame-Mensah (83rd), Stephanie Vrakas (86th) and Lebron (88th). Bryn Mawr outshot the Lions, 34-2.
Lincoln returns to action Tuesday afternoon when it travels to Valley Forge Christian College (4:00 p.m.). It will be the start of a five-game road trip.
