Cheyney's second-half burst ends Lincoln winning streak

PHILADELPHIA, PA. (December 15, 2007) -- The Cheyney University women's basketball team scored 15 unanswered points during a four-minute stretch of the second-half to pull away and defeat Lincoln University, 82-66, Saturday night at Temple University's McGonigle Hall. (BOXSCORE)

Freshman DeJuana Mosley led all scorers with 20 points and 11 rebounds. It was Mosley's second double-double in three games this week. During a 2-1 week for Lincoln, Mosley led Lincoln in scoring in all three games by averaging 18 points. Senior Asha Atkinson notched her 19th career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Tanina Cook added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Lions, who saw their two-game winning streak end.

Sophomore Chanelle Harris contributed nine points for Lincoln (2-8 overall). Senior Sharell McMillan forced three turnovers by putting her body in front of Cheyney players and picking up offensive fouls. McMillan also grabbed five rebounds.

However, Cheyney's balance proved to be the difference. The Wolves had 11 players score at least two points highlighted by Lutfiyya Muhammed's 15 points and six rebounds. Also reaching double digits for Cheyney was Danielle Jones, who added 13 points, and Stephanie Orji, who finished with 10 points.

Desiree Asberry grabbed 10 rebounds for Cheyney (1-4). Lillian Penn added eight rebounds for Cheyney, which received 50 points from its bench players. Cheyney outscored Lincoln, 50-31, in the second half. After Lincoln made 46 percent of its shots in the first half, Cheyney's defense tightend and held the Lions to 29 percent shooting after intermission (9-for-31).

The game started well for Lincoln as it sprinted to a 20-9 advantage eight minutes into the game following a Mosley 3-pointer. However, the game changed at the end of the first half with Cheyney trailing, 35-29, in the final seconds. Jones made a 3-pointer as the first half buzzer sounded to pull Cheyney to within, 35-32, at intermission.

Cheyney continued to ride the momentum of that shot into the second half. Cheyney began the half by scoring 12 of the first 15 points to grab a 44-38 lead with 14:54 remaining. Lincoln temporarily recovered when it scored the next five points on a Mosley layup and a Cook 3-pointer. Lincoln trailed, 44-43, with 14:04 remaining. The next time the Lions scored, they were trailing, 59-43, with 10 minutes remaining. During Cheyney's game-altering burst, five different Cheyney players scored.
