Inspired effort can't lift Lincoln past Elizabeth City State

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (November 19, 2007) – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team dropped a 71-50 decision to Elizabeth City State University Monday night at the R.L. Vaughn Center. (BOXSCORE)

Lincoln junior Tanina Cook (Landover, MD/Charles H. Flowers) led Lincoln in scoring for the third consecutive game with 18 points on 6-for-13 shooting. Freshman DeJuanna Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester) supplied 12 points off the bench for the Lions (0-3). Senior Asha Atkinson (Deptford, PA/.Deptford) contributed eight points.

Defensively, Lincoln recorded 18 steals with senior Sharell McMillan (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman), sophomore Chanelle Harris (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood), Cook and Mosley collecting three each. The Lions aggressive defense forced 34 ECSU turnovers. Harris also handed out a season-best six assists.

However, the Lions had trouble containing Elizabeth City's National Player of the Year candidate Celeste Trahan, who torched Lincoln for 28 points and 20 rebounds. Trahan, who was named to the 2007 NCAA Division II Kodak/WBCA All-America team, has posted 63 career double-doubles in 86 career games. Trahan, the reigning CIAA Player of the Year, scored 19 points in the first half to help ECSU open a 39-25 halftime lead.

Other double digit scorers for the Vikings included Cheniece Arthur (12 points) and Joyce Freeman (10 points and six assists).

Elizabeth City (1-0) made 60.9 percent of its shots thanks to Trahan's 10-for-16 accuracy from the field. Meanwhile, Lincoln's shooting was not as sharp as it made just 27.9 percent of its shots (17-for-61).

Lincoln returns to action on Saturday December 1 when it travels to Virginia State University for a 5:30 p.m. start. The game can be heard at www.redzonemedia.com with Matt Martucci, the voice of the Lions, calling all of the action from Ettrick, Va.
