Swailes and Bowie State too much for Lincoln women in James A. Richardson tournament

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (November 17, 2007) – Allyson Swailes scored 21 of her game-high 29 points and made 11 of her first 12 shots to lift the Bowie State University women's basketball team to an 82-50 victory over Lincoln University of Pennsylvania in the second game of the James A. Richardson Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon at Manuel Rivero Hall. (BOXSCORE)

 

In setting a James A. Richardson tournament scoring record, Swailes also grabbed nine rebounds. Swailes was named tournament MVP along with Saint Paul's College guard Juantelle Cook, who averaged 21 points in leading the Tigers to a pair of victories.

 

The rest of the all-tournament team included Lincoln's Tanina Cook, Bowie State's Markeya Watson, Saint Paul's Gabrielle Johnson and Wilberforce's Janicia Anderson.

 

Overall, the visiting Bulldogs (2-0) placed four players in double figures. Bianca Lee scored 14 points, Watson added 11 points and eight rebounds, and Teaunsha Robinson netted 10 points. Sherika Thomas had nine rebounds for the Bulldogs, who have won their last three games in Rivero Hall by an average of 31.3 points per game.

 

Cook led Lincoln with 16 points and eight rebounds. Chanelle Harris chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds. Harris made three 3-pointers. DeJuanna Mosley finished with nine points for the Lions (0-2).

 

Aside from Swailes, the difference in the game was Lincoln's shooting. The Lions made just 30.2 percent (16-for-53) of their shots. Meanwhile, fueled by Swailes, Bowie State shot 49.2 percent (33-for-67). After scoring the first basket of the game, Bowie scored eight straight points en route to opening a 24-14 advantage midway through the first half.

 

The Bulldogs took control of the game late in the first half after Lincoln pulled to within, 29-25 following a Mosley 3-pointer with three minutes, 14 seconds remaining. Bowie used a 26-8 spurt that bridged the first and second halves to open a 55-33 lead with 15:14 remaining.

 

In the opening game, Saint Pual's pulled away from a tight contest early in the second half to record an 87-57 victory. Cook scored a game-high 22 points. Katrina Wright added 18 points and six rebounds. Gabrielle Johnson also finished with 13 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers, who improved to 2-0. Holding a slim 50-46 advantage with 14:16 remaining, Saint Paul's went on a 20-6 run to open a 70-52 lead with 6:08 remaining.

 

Wilberforce dropped to 3-3 overall despite 20 points from Anderson, 16 points and nine rebounds from Tamara Moss and 10 points from Leilani Rhynehardt.
