LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (November 16, 2007) – Lincoln University of Pennsylvania junior forward Tanina Cook scored a career-high 23 points, but it wasn't enough as the Lions lost their season-opener to Saint Paul's College, 82-64, in the first round of the James A. Richardson Tip-Off Tournament Friday night at Manuel Rivero Hall. (BOXSCORE)
Bowie State defeated Wilberforce, 79-52, in the opening game of the James A. Richardson Tip-Off Tournament.
Cook made 7-of-13 shots from the field including a 3-pointers and made 8-of-14 shots from the foul line for Lincoln (0-1). Cook's previous career best was a 19-point performance against Lycoming College last year on January 15, 2007.
Lincoln freshman DeJuanna Mosley had an impressive debut by scoring 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Mosley had a stretch of eight consecutive points midway through the first half that electrified the capacity crowd. Mosley's scoring surge helped Lincoln overcome an early 25-12 deficit. Lincoln, which never led, trailed, 25-24, with six minutes, 41 seconds remaining in the first half.
Senior Asha Atkinson added nine points and eight rebounds and sophomore Chanelle Harris, who scored Lincoln's first five points of the game, finished with four assists and four steals.
The Tigers, which placed four players in double figures, ended the half by scoring 15 of 20 points to open a 40-29 halftime advantage. Unfortunately, the Lions never got Saint Paul's lead under double digits during the second half.
Saint Paul's guard Juantelle Cook scored 22 points and handed out eight assists. Also reaching double figures for the Tigers were Gabrielle Johnson (13 points, 12 rebounds), Alicia Brown (11) and Shayln Graves (11). Salethia Parker also added six assists. Saint Paul's outrebounded Lincoln, 63-35. The Tigers had 27 offensive rebounds. Saint Paul's shared the ball by recording 20 assists on its 29 baskets. The Tigers also shot 46 percent (29-for-63).
Lincoln will host Bowie State University at 3:00 p.m. in the second game of the James A. Richardson Tip-Off Tournament.
