Barton blanks Lincoln

WILSON, NC – The Barton College men's soccer team posted a 3-0 shutout of visiting Lincoln University (PA) on Sunday afternoon to get its second win in its last three outings.

J.D. Spencer, Derek Hanson and Matt Burleson scored goals and Chris Tripp tallied two assists for the Bulldogs (4-9-1) of first-year head coach Matt Akins.

Barton bolted to a 2-0 lead in the first half over the Lions (2-7), who had lost at Mount Olive on Saturday night. Spencer volleyed in a cross from Tripp in the 18th minute and Hanson notched his first career goal of the season in the 35th minute off another cross from Tripp.

Burleson finished the scoring with a left-footed shot that found the goal from 16 yards.

Matt Coble got the win in goal for Barton while John Sheyi Oluwole (Lagos, NIgeria/Immaculate Heart) took the loss in 72 minutes of net-minding action. He yielded two goals and made eight saves while Andre Wilkinson (St. Michael, Barbabos/William E. Grady, NY) allowed one goal and made three saves.

Barton is home with Conference Carolinas foe Coker at 7 p.m. Wednesday night. Meanwhile, Lincoln will return home to play two of its final three matches of the season. The Lions will not leave the state of Pennsylvania for the remainder of the season. Lincoln hosts Chestnut HIll College on Tuesday October 16 beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Lions are 2-0 at home this season.
