Jones' speed and finishing touch lifts Lincoln to first victory in 2007

PHOENIXVILLE, PA. (October 2, 2007) – The Lincoln University women's soccer team began the month of October by defeating Valley Forge Christian College, 3-1, to claim its first victory of the 2007 season in a non-conference women's soccer match Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore Antonia “White Out” Jones scored two goals as Lincoln improved its overall record to 1-9-3 and defeated Valley Forge Christian College for the first time in school history.

Jones was playing her second game after sitting out the previous six with an injury. This is also Joneses first year playing soccer. She ran track last year. Also scoring for Lincoln was freshman Chiamaka Opara, who also recorded an assist on Joneses first goal of the game.

Opara got the Lions on the scoreboard first in the 15th minute. It was Opara's sixth goal, tying her for team-high honors with freshman classmate Shaynita Blanchard, who recorded the assist on Opara's goal. Opara and Blanchard are each one goal behind Tia Redden, who played from 2004-2006, for the women's soccer single-season record for goals in a season. Redden holds the mark with seven goals during the 2005 season.

Valley Forge Christian College tied the game immediately after halftime on Ashley Valentin's goal in the 52nd minute. However, the Lions were not going to be denied in their bid for their first victory of the season. Jones scored her first career game winning goal in the 55th minute off of an assist from Opara. Jones then iced the victory for the Lions by finding the back of the net in the 75th minute.

Junior keeper Tanina Cook made sure Lincoln's advantage would hold by making 10 saves.

Lincoln will return to action Saturday night when it travels to Marymount University for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
