Lincoln throws scare into nationally-ranked East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG, PA. (October 2, 2007) – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania men;s soccer team turned in an effort to be proud of during a 4-1 road defeat to nationally-ranked East Stroudsburg University Tuesday evening at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
 
East Stroudsburg (12-1 overall), ranked No. 9 in this week's NSCAA/adidas poll, went ahead 1-0 on the seventh goal of the season by junior forward Kevin Holmes in the 20th minute. Lincoln (2-6) responded with a goal by Peter Jarbo (Philadelphia, PA/Carver Mission Academy), his sixth of the season and 49th career tally, eight minutes later, and the score remained deadlocked at 1-1 at intermission.
 
“I dislike the result, but I am very happy with my team's effort,” Lincoln coach Mass Sarr Jr. said. “They played extremely well and the effort was excellent. We just ran out of gas. This is definitely a game we can build on for this weekend.”
 
The second half belonged to the Warriors. Sophomore Danny Drago scored off an assist from senior Jeff Herber 11:32 into the second half to give the Warriors the lead for good, 2-1. Sophomores Shane McFarlane and J.J. DiFerdinando also added second-half goals for ESU, which won its 10th consecutive match.
 
Turning in strong efforts for Lincoln according to Sarr were senior Jerrell Hooker (Cunupia, Trinidad/Presentation College), senior defender Kamah Dawana (Philadelphia, PA/Engineering & Science), junior forward Theon Francis (Trinidad & Tobago/Queens Royal College) and freshman keeper Andre Wilkinson (St. Michael, Barbabos/William E. Grady, NY), who finished with eight saves.
 
ESU held a 30-4 advantage in shots for the match, including a 16-1 edge in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Larry Pokrywa made three saves for the Warriors.
 
Lincoln concludes its five game road trip with a weekend journey to North Carolina. The Lions will battle Mount Olive College Saturday afternoon (3 p.m.) and Barton College Sunday afternoon (3 p.m.).
 
Meanwhile, the Warriors will travel to California for PSAC action on Saturday at 12 p.m. as they look to avenge their only loss of the season, a 2-1 setback on Sept. 1.
