LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (October 16, 2007) – Chestnut Hill College sophomore forward Andrew Thorne (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) scored the only goal of the match to lift the visiting Griffins to a 1-0 victory over Lincoln University of Pennsylvania in a non-conference men's soccer match Tuesday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)
Thorne's goal in the 60th minute helped Chestnut Hill improve its record to 7-6-2 overall. Meanwhile, Lincoln saw its record drop to 2-9 with its sixth consecutive defeat and first home defeat of the year. Thorne got the ball on the right wing, made a great individual move and fired a shot to the far post that landed in the back of the net.
Chestnut Hill keeper Duhan Malali (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) stopped eight shots to record the shutout. Lincoln's Andre Wilkinson (St. Michael, Barbabos/William E. Grady, NY) was just as superb in goal by making eight saves.
Lincoln held a 17-12 edge in shots with Theon Francis (Trinidad & Tobago/Queens Royal College) (Trinidad & Tobago/Queens Royal College) (six shots) and Kamah Dawana (Philadelphia, PA/Engineering & Science) (Philadelphia, PA/Engineering & Science) (four) combining for 10 shots. Peter Jarbo (Philadelphia, PA/Carver Mission Academy) (Monrovia, Liberia/Carver Mission Academy), Rasaan Lisimba (Darby, PA/Penn Wood) and Joseph Forde (Siparia, Trinidad & Tobago/Bensalem) had two shots each for Lincoln. Chetsnut Hill's Joe Zachs (Manchester, England/Loreto) led the Griffins with three shots.
Dawana had an excellent chance to give Lincoln a halftime lead. He was alone in front of Malali, who was out of position on the play. However, Dawana's shot sailed high of an open net.
After Chestnut Hill scored, Lincoln had several strong chances to tie the game. Lisimba had a shot go about two inches wide off of a header in the 75th minute. The Lions also had two crosses that failed to find a connecting body late in the game. Even with its slim lead, Chestnut Hill continued to apply offensive pressure. Wilkinson stopped three consecutive point-blank opportunities during a two-minute stretch of the second half to keep the Lincoln deficit at one.
Lincoln returns to action Saturday afternoon when it travels to Valley Forge Christian College for a 1:00 p.m. start. Chestnut Hill hosts Holy Family University Thursday afternoon beginning at 4:00 p.m.
