DURHAM, N.C. – The Lincoln University (Pa.) women's soccer team controlled much of the offensive pressure Monday afternoon, but a late goal proved to be the difference as the Lions fell to Shaw University, 1-0, at Wake Stone Park.
With the loss, Lincoln moves to 0-1-1 on the season, while Shaw improves to 1-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Lincoln finished with a 10-5 advantage in shots and held a commanding 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Both teams recorded three shots on goal.
Sahida Dumbuya (Freetown, Sierra Leone) led Lincoln with three shots, including one on goal, while
Jordan Allison (Baltimore, MD) and Keylee Campbell recorded two attempts apiece. Campbell also placed one shot on frame.
Defensively, Lincoln held Shaw to only five total shots over 90 minutes.
Ricyonna Walker (Kingston, Jamaica),
Jenesis Kitchen (Baltimore, MD),
Briana Poullard (Elkton, MD) and
Breanna Steen (Bethel, CT) each played the full 90 minutes for the Lions.
Goalkeeper
Nevaeh Washington (Philadelphia, PA) also played all 90 minutes, finishing with two saves while allowing just the one late goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions established pressure throughout the opening half, holding a 3-1 advantage in shots and generating three corner kicks while keeping the Bears off the scoreboard.
Lincoln had an opportunity to break through in the 40th minute when
Imani Hood (Long Island, NY) put an attempt on frame, but Shaw goalkeeper Alexis Stephens made the save to send the teams into halftime scoreless.
The Lions increased their offensive pressure after the break.
Sahida Dumbuya (Freetown, Sierra Leone) put a shot on goal less than two minutes into the second half, forcing another save from Stephens. Lincoln continued creating opportunities and finished the second half with seven shots and four corner kicks.
Despite Lincoln controlling much of the offensive action, Shaw found the breakthrough late in regulation.
In the 83rd minute, Savanah Echeverria scored off an assist from Damilola Onafowokan to give Shaw a 1-0 advantage.
Lincoln continued to push for the equalizer during the closing minutes but was unable to find the back of the net before the final whistle.
Lincoln's defense held Shaw to one shot in the opening 45 minutes and kept the Bears scoreless for more than 82 minutes.
